Patrick Spurlock: Goes on Shooting Rampage, Injuring 4, Then Dies in Car Accident

A chronically disgruntled renter went on a shooting rampage Wednesday morning and injured four people before dying in a traffic accident, police say.

HPD has identified the shooter as Patrick O'Neal Spurlock, 39. They said they received a call of a shooting in progress at an apartment in the 6000 block of Hollister, near 290.

When they arrived, they found a security guard, a maintenance worker and a tenant who had been shot, a fourth person who said he'd been grazed.

"Rafael Martinez, 40, a maintenance man, Ebenezer Sunkio-Jacks, 57, a security guard, and Walter Moss, 62, a tenant. Mr.'s Martinez and Sunkio-Jacks are in stable condition at Ben Taub General Hospital, while Mr. Moss remains in critical condition at Memorial Hermann Hospital," HPD said Thursday afternoon.

Spurlock went to a neighboring complex and stole a car, police say. "As responding officers pursued him in the stolen vehicle, Spurlock rammed several police patrol cars and fired shots at numerous officers before crashing the stolen vehicle into other motorists at 13200 Northwest Freeway at Hollister," HPD says, noting that five people were injured in the accident, none severely.

"The incident began when Spurlock confronted Mr. Sunkio-Jacks and shot him," HPD says. "Investigators learned Spurlock, a tenant, had previous and ongoing confrontations with apartment management and security personnel at the complex where the shooting occurred."

Cops shot at Spurlock during the incident, so the case will be reviewed in Internal Affairs and other departments.
