Pat Lykos's Loss Brings Joy to Lots of Ex-Prosecutors

Pat Lykos's DA career is over.
Harris County District Attorney Pat Lykos was soundly defeated in her GOP-primary re-election race yesterday, a result that greatly cheered the nearly 100 prosecutors who had left the DA's office in her single term.

Many of them were at the victory party for Mike Anderson, the former prosecutor who grabbed 63 percent of the vote against Lykos.

And today, Lykos's most persistent critic, Murray Newman, wrote on his well-read blog, "Well, I'm not going to lie. I woke up with a smile on my face this morning."

Anderson had many influential endorsements, including the Houston Police Officers Union.

Lykos pissed off a remarkably large number of people in her one term. She fired or ran off many experienced prosecutors, and instituted policies that critics said were too lenient for first-time DWI defendants.

On the other hand, many people thought the DA's office had become ossified and that cracking down hard on someone with one DWI was not the most effective way to deal with them.

Lykos's abrasive personality, though, made even some people who supported her policies dislike her.

She had been a police officer and a judge, but never a prosecutor when she took office.

Anderson, who did the usual tough-on-crime shtick during his race, will face Democrat Lloyd Oliver, who won an upset race. Oliver received extremely low ratings in the Houston Bar Association's survey on judicial qualifications.

What in the world has happened to the search for true justice?   You remember the statue of the lady blindfolded holding the scales of justice,, now law is played like a game of chess, the DA office doing a win at any and all costs, regardless of the facts. I know for a fact that DAs ,once they have accepted a case, refuse to back down even when everything in the case blows up in their face and they can plainly see the accused is innocent.  They just assume (when you just assume you make an ASS out of U and ME) that because a person is accused of a crime they must be guilty.  How many lives are wasted because the DAs pride got in the way.. the laws of probability alone would strongly suggest that 100% of the accused are not guilty.come on you attorneys... represent true JUSTICE not just your pride. If you can scratch up $50000 - $60000 you can hire honest hard working attorney who will actually do his job, and believe me these guys are rare at any price. But of course by now you've had to sell all asset you have or ever will have ....and any DA worth his salt could clearly see this man was completely innocent but they won't budge until they see the face of your high price lawyer..... then they fold like butter because they know they do'nt have a shadow of a case, And so many people don't have access to generous relatives, friends, neighbors and coworkers.  The price of 15to20 years of a mans life in Harris County Texas is  450,000.

She's like the devil's daughter.  Old and mean.  We are one of those families you described.    All of them can muster up a fake smile in a second, just like a child caught doing wrong.  She's out of touch with the world.  Now she is trying to slay those who investigated against her.  She should not be allowed to fire anybody before her term ends.  The damage she caused has already been done.  Why are they letting her continue to carry her bayonet?

Yeah, in Pearland it's Loony LaRouche-fite Kesha Rogers or Pete, Tom-Delay's-water-boy, Olson. I feel your pain.

She acted like a dem.  I always thought she was a dem.  Mike will be a great DA.

"She acted like a dem." What do you mean? She could speak without drooling?

Chucky Junior will make Harris County the death penalty capital of the world again.  Wait until one of you Anderson supporters gets caught up in a criminal case (however minor it may be) and only then you will see how "tough on crime" means you will get the short end of the stick no matter how innocent you are of the charges.  Harris County is f***ed now.  Start building more jails and prisons.

Agreed. Lykos had an abrasive personality, and she didn't sell her case in the most effective way, but the last thing Harris County DA's office needs is a return to the so called "good ole days".

She sent my son to prison with a trumped up decision from the grand jury.  What can be worse?

Never happened. Grand juries don't make such recommendations to the judge.
