I graduated in '73 from SFA and still proud to say I am a mustang! I was part of the old drill team The Scottish Brigade and will always have fond memories of that. Glad to see it took #1 although I felt all the other schools shown were beautiful as well!

So of course, you're making a list of the ugliest ones, right?

That was unnecessary. My mother graduated from Yates in the 70's and she is a nurse who is well respected in her field and also has a beautiful home in Sugar Land. Get your facts straight before you assume anything.

Jefferson Davis High School is also nice, but not as lovingly restored as Reagan HS.

Jefferson is something to look at. Similar to SFA but with a more gothic twist.

My dad attended SFA in the 60s. His high school sweetheart ended up marrying Rod Stewart. He said it's 99% disadvantaged today.

Disadvantaged by choice maybe... disadvantaged in that your family doesn't value education and you'd rather play thug than student... disadvantaged in that it's easier to take advantage of society than to be responsible for oneself... disadvantaged in that if mom and dad aren't together or aren't legally married then "we're poor, barely above the poverty line", needy of free breakfasts and lunches, despite the "screen tv", two cars, fancy rims and stereos, and weekend parties...

Darn those poor folks and their handouts. Remember those $600 checks the government sent out a couple of years ago to stimulate the economy? Every righteous middle class American I know sent theirs back, ripped it up, refused to take it. They knew it wasn't a tax refund (and it wasn't); they didn't earn the money. It was just free government money, and by god, they weren't going to take it!

No one had mentioned African Americans prior to you, in fact, in context to the school referenced, African Americans should be the furthest thing from your mind. Yet you read into Heikki's comment that African American's needed to be defended, when they weren't even being discussed.

Samagon, how do I have poor judgmental tendencies? I said that one should not judge people so harshly and that not all people are living beyond their means and asking for handouts. Why don't you really READ the comments before you reply to them? It does not matter if Heikki was talking about AA's or Hispanic Americans or Martian Americans, no one should be so judgmental!

it's funny, because SFA is predominantly Hispanic, about 95% of the school is Hispanic, and less than 4% is African American.

it seems both you, Bre, and Heikki have some poor judgmental tendencies!

Anyway, Heikki, I live about half a mile from SFA, while a lot of the families in my neighborhood do have 2 cars, it's not common for them to have 'fancy rims' or 'stereos'.

It is a beautiful school, and there are some amazing old buildings around the area. the oak farms dairy is a great piece of architecture (as one example).

I went to Lamar, I remember lunches on the front lawn, well , that was before mandatory busing led to thugs all over the place that led to the security lockdown of the place...ah well, memories...

We used to eat lunch on the front lawn, too, until they wouldn't let us anymore because of all the West U/River Oaks brats who were obviously waiting on their maids to clean up after them left their trash everywhere.

In the early fifties, my boyfriend and later husband and I were eating lunch under a tree on the front lawn of Lamar. He was smoking when the assistant principal appeared, so he just put the cigarette under my skirt, which billowed out and was long. If caught smoking, he would have been expelled. It is nice to see that the Lamar, Reagan and Milby High School structures look pretty much the way they did. I think Lamar was built in the early thirties, so it must say something about construction back then.

When I was there in the late '80s, we continued to have lunch in the front lawn. And the buses were bright kids who had been selected to participate in the Business Administration Magnet program.
