The Healthiest County in Texas Definitely Isn't Around Here

All bow to Collin County.
The University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation have put together a list of health by county across the nation, looking at births, deaths and various measures of the quality of life.

You can get a statewide ranking of the counties in your state, and if you look at it, you won't find any county around here in the top five. Or top eight.

Fort Bend County finally pops up in the nine spot. And Brazos County comes in at number 10.

Collin County, north of Dallas, tops the list; the top ten also includes Travis and Denton.

Harris County? Fifty-three, two slots lower than Dallas County.

We were hurt mostly by our "morbidity," which includes such sub-categories as "poor physical health days."

Galveston County, by the way, weighed in at 86.

The study seems fataly flawed from not adjusting for age.  It seems to parrallel a ranking of counties by average age.  A glaring anomoly is that all the counties along the Mexican border from Brownsville to Del Rio are in the top ranking.  But, this heavily Hispanic population is well known to have widespread, chronic health problems, mostley near epidemic obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure.  The population has a very young average age.
