Gilberto Montezano: Trades in badge for a case of cold Bud Lite.
For the third time since August, a cop in the Rio Grande Valley town of Edinburg has been terminated and faced criminal charges for varied forms of corruption.

In the most recent case, in April of last year, 30-year-old Gilberto Montezano pulled over a truck driven by Miguel Guzman and evidently told him he could go with a warning, so long as he handed over his ice chest full of brewskies.

Guzman complied, but ultimately made his story known to the Texas Rangers, who formally charged Montezano with official oppression. He was subsequently terminated and will never again be a cop. And he was also convicted in court, netting an 18-month stint on probation and a fine of $500. Let's hope he makes restitution to Guzman, too, and takes him to Academy and H-E-B and replenishes what he appropriated.

While that case involved a guy wanting to get a gratis buzz on, the two other recent cases concerned cops apparently wanting to get some action.

Last November, 42-year-old Cesar Gabriel was convicted of putting the moves on a woman he had pulled over. He too was fired and received 18 months deferred adjudication.

And then there was renowned local gang investigator Robert Alvarez, AS SEEN ON TV and, later, here on Hair Balls.

A couple of years ago, producers from the History Channel show Gangland talked at length to Alvarez in an episode on feared Valley hoodlums the Tri-City Bombers. Months later, Alvarez was accused of falsely reporting overtime (while he was actually canoodling with a woman at her home), boffing a second woman whose digits he obtained in the course of an official investigation, and getting a jailhouse blow job from yet another woman, this one a robbery suspect.

Convicted only of misuse of official information, Alvarez received three years probation.
