Wheatley High Forfeits Five Basketball Games Because of Ineligible Players

No longer such a great record.
Well, this is embarrassing: Just one day after the Attorney General of the United States visited its campus and gave an uplifting speech on doing what's right, Wheatley High has been forced to forfeit five basketball games because of ineligible players.

The announcement from HISD said the school -- which at one point the district hoped to merge with Carnegie Vanguard -- forfeited the games because "six freshmen enrolled at the Young Men's College Preparatory Academy were allowed to play in six games for Wheatley. The students reside in the Sterling High School attendance zone."

UIL rules "clearly state that students attending schools with no attendance zones, such as the Young Men's College Preparatory Academy, are to participate in athletics on their home campus," the district said.

Three of the six ineligible players played in six varsity games, and Wheatley won five of them.

The new standings for District 22-4A:

1. Jones (11-1)
2. Worthing (7-4)
3. Washington (6-5)
4. Wheatley (5-6)
5. Furr (4-7)
6. Kashmere (4-8)
7. Scarborough (2-9)
