David Keith Allen: Recently Remarried Former Pastor Accused of Killing Wife in House Fire

David and Paula Allen in happier times.
The very best preachers are consummate showmen, able to sell you on the sincerity of their message with the utmost aplomb.

49-year-old David Keith Allen, former pastor at the New Life Church of Restoration just east of Gatesville, sounds like a hell of a performer. In the wee hours of one morning last March, the double-wide trailer he shared with his 54-year-old wife Paula Allen became suddenly engulfed in flames. After the fire was extinguished, Paula Allen's body was found near the front door. A coroner ruled that she died of both smoke inhalation and thermal burns.

Before the grisly discovery of Paula's charred remains, her husband was preaching his innocence to all who would listen, the whole hellish congregation bathed in the dancing red lights of the fire trucks and orange glare of the fire and suffused with the aroma of death and burnt plastic....

Suspicions started falling on Allen weeks after the fire
His face covered in soot and streaked with tears, the good reverend told investigators that he had been sleeping in the living room when the fire broke out. He said he kicked out some windows and jumped out of the trailer, and then ran around the back to try to pull his sleeping wife out of the back bedroom. Alas, he had been overcome by smoke, but he did not require medical attention.

After the Reverend Allen called out the fire department, word of the blaze spread almost as fast as the inferno itself.

An elder at New Life church told Waco's KXXV that several members of Allen's flock drove out to the scene to comfort their hysterical pastor.

"When I got here, David was kneeling in the grass over there in his agony in his loss and in hope that we would find his wife," the elder said. "He was on the ground with a blanket and kind of on his knees and his elbows crying, you know, just crying out," recalled another New Life parishioner.

Another family friend apparently was too choked up to talk about the pastor's loss. "Having to see David go through what he's going through, he, he is a strong man, but...," the friend told KCEN-TV.

Allen had better be a strong man, because he's now facing a capital murder rap in the Coryell County Jail. Police say he intentionally set and used an accelerant to abet the fire that burned and choked his wife of nearly 20 years to death.

Since arson was committed along with an alleged murder, it is being prosecuted as a capital offense, and thus no bond has been set.

The town rallied around Allen in the weeks following the fire. A benefit was held for the pastor this past April Fool's Day, aptly enough, and it raised $6,000, which well-wishers proudly handed over to Allen.

Not long after that, however, suspicions started to descend upon the preacher, apparently in no small part due to his involvement with 27-year-old Megan Lynn Griffith, a former singer in the church choir rumored to be pregnant with Allen's baby. In June, Coryell County Sheriff Johnny Burks announced that both his office and the Texas Rangers were investigating Allen and the fire.

Yesterday, KWTX broke the news that Allen married Griffith at some point in the last week or so.

He would not get to honeymoon for long.

Allen stepped down from the pulpit at New Life before his arrest and has started a small church called Final Victory Ministry, which holds services in the Gatesville Ramada Inn.

Here's a sample sermon:

New Life Church has since changed its name to the Crossroads House of Prayer.

i will never forget that night. but i know for a fact we were not basking in the glow of that fire...all i hear is hate and no actual sympathy for those who loved paula....you shame her memory for defaming the church....yes david was good at acting, but no that he is exposed he will pay. paula loved God with all her heart and had a sweet spirit...you dont know what it's been like. so how dare you.

The whole congregation DID NOT go to the burning mobile home that morning. And the congregation of New Life was not hellish. I am offended by that. Most if us that caught on that his story wasn't just right did not chose to stand beside him! We want justice just as much or more since Paula was our friend than anyone else!

This makes me so sick and sad that a human of his stature is given a gift of God to preach is capable of such a crime and therefore continue preaching the Word of God without any sense of remorse or guilt.

David was my spiritual mentor for many years. I was very close to him and paula. Megan was my girlfriend for four years and we almost got married. I never saw anything that would foreshadow to this type of behavior in the two of them. However I visited the church one time and her eyes were fixed on him the whole time. There was a time that i did break away from david allen because he got off on super spiritual tangents. I'll never forget the morning i got the call about paula. I knew immediately that he had something to do with it. He allowed his charisma and power take hold of him. sadly he knew what he was doing.

I don't know where these reporters get their false information! But they post a lot of hurtful false information about a lot of good caring people who were NOT! Dancing in the freaking glow of the fire! We are not hellish at all! We were trying to comfort our morning pastor so we thought! As for David! He did kill Paula. We have no doubt about that now. We are all very sad for everyone he and Megan has hurt!

If the new wife is involved she won't have far to go. Gatesville is home of the Texas womens max prison.

I find it a little suspicious that it's barely been a year since his wife died and he's already remarried. In my view, that points to him having been cheating. And if he is innocent, then what need would he have to be proclaiming his innocence before her body was found?

Witnesses said he also happened to have fallen asleep with his truck keys, wallet and iPhone, all in his pocket.

I know David Alllen personally. He is a man of God. I don't know if he actually did this. I'm not the one to point fingers. Only God knows.

What I know of David, he is honest and careing. He and Paula was the prime example for a marriage. David helped me though my darkest times in life... He led me to Jesus. When I thought all was going to end, he focused me back on Jesus. Jesus is what he believed and breathed.

Really? A prime example of a good marriage? Really? You obviously did NOT know Paula Allen and if you did you would have known their marriage was struggling. She spoke to me personally (a real friend) many of times wishing David would be romantic, but you dont know about that do you? Your proably one of David's minions. This man is as guilty as it gets. If the investigators brought enough evidence before grand jury and they issued a warrant?? Hello?? You know whats sad?? is when they convict this man and all his followers are left looking like idiots. Sit back and watch the news and hold on cause its going to get bumpy.
