Comment of the Day: The Tired Old N-Word Defense

We have some great commenters here on Hair Balls, and it's time we paid some damn attention to them.

So we'll be highlighting a Comment of the Day each morning, from the previous day's work. Maybe two comments, even.

This will all be determined by a highly rigorous scientific formula involving wit, clarity and whatever else we feel like at the moment.

We wrote about how the acting city manager of League City -- a middle-aged white guy -- was suspended for using the N-word in a discussion of the BCS title game.

Some folks went to the tired old "black people use that word all the time" card, which led another reader to react.

I think if you read most of the comments, the point people are trying to make is that there is a disparity in how this rule is applied.  I don't think anyone is trying to say using "N1gger" is excuseable.  The point is that neither is "N1gga," "N1ggah" or really any other variant appropriate in the work place.  In light of that, this rule should be applied to all members of the work force.  It is the same for any offensive term, that would alienate a group and impede on their ability to work in a friendly environment.  This city manager should be dealt with according to policy, but so should anyone else regardless of race.

You will be happy to know that, under the Civil Rights Act of 1964, a white city manager using that word cannot be treated differently than a black city manager using the same word. 

Now, the entire national workforce is not held to the same standard, presumably... and I'm not sure whether you were somehow intending that the feds should issue a national standard. But the city has to treat all races the same. 

Basic civics.
