Being underwater is not good for cars. It can lead to moldy smells from sodden rugs and upholstery to mysterious problems with the electrical system, problems that might not be immediately apparent.

But when a lot of cars get hit at the same time, the system for rectifying those problems can be tested.

And that's why it's tough to get a rental car or an insurance adjuster in Houston right now.

If you waited until Tuesday, say, to start a claim, you were told by one company it might be a full week until an adjuster could get out to see your car, a step which needs to be taken before repairs can start.

And if your policy calls for a rental car in case of claims, you would have called the rental car company to find you have the chance to be Number 40 on the waiting list.

A call saying a car was available might not come for several days.

So the rain might be gone, but the fun remains.
