Winter Might Not Be as Dry and Warm as Previously Thought

The folks at AccuWeather have done some additional forecasting and, as it turns out, we might not have quite the dry and/or mild conditions this winter that were previously forecast.

Looking at the map at the top of this post, you can see we are still in the "mild and dry" area, but not by much. Forecasters are predicting a moderate La Nina event this year, which generally coincides with drier, warmer conditions in our area, but a strong North Atlantic Oscillation (generally, a large area of high pressure near Greenland) could force colder temperatures southward along with precipitation.

We got our first dose of real winter weather -- Texas style -- last weekend with rain and significantly colder temperatures. We have remained in the 60s and low 70s all week. This week, a reinforcing blast of even colder air is headed our way along with, potentially, some fairly substantial rainfall.

Forecasts are calling for as much as 1 to 2 inches of rain throughout the area Sunday and Monday, with temperatures falling into the low 30s early next week. The greater Houston area could get its first freeze of the year.

With drought conditions remaining throughout the state, any rain is good rain at this point. Our area has begun to bounce back and reservoirs have regained some of their losses in the last couple months. But west Texas continues to suffer from one of the worst droughts in decades and, unfortunately for them, relief does not appear in sight.
