Action this day.
The Occupy Houston protesters took to the Port of Houston today, with about 70 people showing up and several arrests made for blocking a service road, according to some estimates.

HPD and the sheriff's office were out in force, including mounted patrols, and seemed to have a preplanned procedure for processing the arrests. They also had barriers to keep other protesters out of the road.

The protesters did succeed in shutting down traffic on one road for at least a while.

Occupy Houston said on its Web site that it was

joining our brothers and sisters in the Occupy movement around the United States in a coordinated action targeting the nation's ports. This event is an expression of solidarity with the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) and West Coast truck drivers who have come under attack this year, as well as a statement against the multinational conglomerates and their relentless campaign to outsource American jobs and undermine our economy in the pursuit of ever-widening profit margins.

Later this afternoon, about 4 p.m., protesters are expected to march "From Tranquility Park on down the length of downtown Main St. from in a visible display of support for the West Coast Port Shutdown effort and the American working class," the Web site says.
