Career Counseling Scammers Still at It

Categories: Whatever

A career-counseling group with many names.
Six years ago, we wrote about a group of vultures purporting to sell "career counseling" to mostly upper-level folks who were either unemployed or looking for a career change. It was, in a word, bullshit.

Called "TCM" at the time of the story, it was a franchise of the troubled Bernard Haldane Associates brand that had existed in countless other three-letter iterations. (It's currently called "MAP," and will doubtlessly shed its skin after this update comes out. Its Dallas branch is called SAS.)

Ever since the story ran, we've received e-mails from people who had posted résumés online and were instantly e-mailed by a representative who said the person was a great candidate for their services. These people told us that, feeling a sketchy vibe, they Googled the place as soon as they got home (or before they went) and found out the real story.

Well, in this economy, we think it's especially scuzzy of MAP to mislead people by withholding certain information about their employees, who are invariably referred to as some sort of senior executive. (Inside, though, there's a clear delineation between sales people and so-called career advisers.)

The man behind MAP, or whatever the hell you want to call it, is Ian McClure. According to a 2005 deposition in a wrongful termination suit filed by a former employee, McClure's job history is this: five to seven years with a company called Comedy Defensive Driving School, and about a year as a physician recruiter. Since then, he's incorporated companies with names like TOP, THE, HCI, STC -- you see where we're going with this.

For a while, now, we've been hearing from folks who've met with a woman calling herself Carol Sand, MAP's "senior vice president." From what we can tell, her real name is Carol Garrett, and she got "Sand" from the name of the street where she lives.

Sand's/Garrett's résumé is odd. For one thing, it says she was a regional vice president for advertising giant J. Walter Thompson, but a spokesperson for the company could find no one named Sand or Garrett ever holding that position. She also wrote that she was vice president of Textured Coatings of America, but they told us she was a salesperson. She also boxed herself into a corner by saying she's been the principal of a company called Carol Sand & Associates since 1993. We scoured the ends of the Earth, and Carol Sand & Associates only seems to exist on her résumé. If you think about it, since she apparently only recently started referring to herself as "Sand," it was kinda dumb to pick an alias that had to retroactively cover the last 18 years. (And no, neither Sand nor Garrett are maiden/married names.)

In her 2007 bankruptcy filing, she listed her occupation as "Senior Career Consultant" at some place called Houston Career Specialists, LLC, which was oddly located in Tucson, Arizona. She also listed previous employment at Chandler-Hill Associates, another so-called career counseling agency. (The trustee in her bankruptcy found that Garrett's filing "is presumed to be an abuse" of the bankruptcy code, by the way.)

We called Garrett to ask her about all of this. She didn't return numerous messages, and we only managed to catch anyone at her number one time -- a woman who said she wasn't Carol Garrett or Carol Sand, and who also angrily told us she was on the computer and therefore too busy to look for a pen to take a message for ol' Carol.

When we called MAP to try to find out about Sand/Garrett (and others), a woman named Erica told us she'd pass along our messages. But we never heard back. Every time we've called MAP (and SAS in Dallas) since then, no one has answered the phone.

See, we also wanted to find out about Robert Lewis, an "executive vice president" of MAP. His résumé is curious, too, not in small measure because it doesn't list the locations of the companies he allegedly worked for. One company is called "Aztec Data Inc," which we couldn't find a match for. He supposedly worked at another company, Quality Foods Distributing, between 1982 and 1984, but we haven't been able to find a company that operated under that name at that time. The only company we could find by that name has only been in business for about a year.

I concur wholeheartedly with everyone's comments and opinions! Carol whomever used the same lines on me--verbatim--that she used on everyone else. And I, too, found it especially creepy when she became overly interested in my husband's career and availability to attend a meeting with me. Yuck! Like so many others here, I found this article while attempting to do some research on these scumbags. I had already decided not to attend a follow-up meeting (where I would have been fleeced), but finding this article and these comments gave me peace of mind in knowing that I can still trust my gut instincts. Oh, btw, Carol now goes by "Carol Strickland," and the office is in Suite 1330 of One Riverway.

Carol Sand is a CON ARTIST. Do not trust these money grubbing scoundrels. Their new address is One Riverway Houston Texas Suite 1325.

I, too, was contacted by this scam shop.  I did not do a great deal of research online prior to going, but I smelled the rat the second that I heard "Did I mention that we are a client fee based service?" and when she said that I needed to bring my wife in with me for the second interview.  It felt like I had just been conned by an Amway or NuSkin salesperson.  It will take weeks to get the smell of them washed off me.  Interestingly, I was told I was going to interview with Gary Campbell, but when I got there, he had been delayed as he had been in an auto accident on his way in to work.  So, I had the privelege of meeting with the queen herself, Carol Sand/Garrett.  She laid it on thick and told me that at my age, I couldn't afford to land a job that would only last 3 or 4 years, as I likely wouldn't be able to get hired again after that.  She told me that my professionally written resume was very poor and that she liked me much better in person than on paper.  She said that there were classes and counseling available to help me with my lame resume and that I needed to commit to every extra add-on they could sell me.  I came home and immediately found this article with a little digging.  Stay away from these people.  To prey on the unemployed is like stealing social security checks from little old ladies.  There is a special place in Hell for people like this.

Same thing here...tore my resume apart, told me I was doing my job searching all wrong.  Said I had no clue of how to land a top tier job.  Ect, ect...1st meeting was a pure qualifying meeting.  Asked me how much money I had in the bank.  Really?  Last he asked me to bring my wife to the 2nd meeting...wow.  Dirt bags.

Unfortunately I am a gullible person. I know that I am an underpaid management consultant that works for a fortune-500 company and has a Master's degree; however, Lewis picked right up on these facts and played right into my psychology making me disillusioned. I'm sure he's right about the hidden job market and that I am worth much more than I am being paid. I got through my second interview with them and asked if I could have 24-hours before signing the paperwork. I got online immediately and started looking and found this. Thank you all, you just saved me from making a very bad decision. Maybe I will get that dream job at Coca Cola in Marketing for 80k; but, I will not pay 2k upfront and another 4k once I get that job, especially after seeing these reviews. I'm glad I only wasted time and really it wasn't time because the "paperwork" allowed me to reflect upon what I really wanted in life. They are still at 1 Riverway Suite 1325. Nice office for sure...

Well, these people are still at it under the "MAP" name. Even "Erica" is still their "executive administrator". Like others here, this didn't seem like a legitimate recruiter call so did some digging. Thank you so much for the article. The latest contact details are:MAP Executive SearchOne Riverway, Suite 1325Houston, TX 77056Phone: (713)871-1630http://www.houston-sea...

Cancelling appointment! Thanks for saving my time.

Just received a call from Erica today to have me come in and meet with their executive something or other Gary Campbell.  Something seemed fishy.  I am glad I googled this place.  Web site was vague at best.

I was called into their offices today for the first face to face and was kind of getting a strange feeling about these guys. Took me a while to find this article, but I'm glad I did! There were two girls at the receptionist desk and yes, 'Erica' is still there. Didn't get pressured during the first meeting, but it was really odd.

Does anyone know of any good (and ligitimate) career coaching or counseling services?

Oh my, I got the same call from Erica V. and this is a scam.  YOU SHOULD NEVER HAVE TO PAY FOR FINDING A JOB.  This Erica V. told me that she got my resume from either LinkedIn or from a referral that thought highly of me.  When asked which method they received by  resume, there was no clear answer from Erica V or Robert Lewis.  However, they requested a hard copy of my resume upon the first meeting.  Why would they have asked for a resume if they supposedly already had my resume.  Could it be that they just wanted to see my fancy resume paper....give me a break.  This is a crock of bs.  I can't believe they feed off of people's vulnerabilities.  This is completely wrong and unethical.  Another thing, if they are so proud of their business....why is there no website info on the business cards or their fancy brochures.  I to was asked for my spouse to come in for set-in, who the hell does that???  Ugh! This is so sickening.

I received a call from someone named Rebecca this morning. She said that upon reviewing my resume, I'm exactly the kind of executive they work with. She wanted to set up a meeting tomorrow at their office in the Galleria. She didn't really tell me what they do. I didn't know if they were a recruiting company, a career counseling service, or what. I finally asked "is this the kind of company where I pay YOU to find me a job?" Her only response was "well we have a sliding scale." I set up the meeting, but was somewhat dubious. I started doing some online research and landed on this article, which is about the only thing online about them. Needless to say, I will not be wasting my time or money with these charlatans.

This is the second time this week I've been hit with one of these scams. I posted my resume on ladders.com and signed up for the "job seeker package." They offered me a "free resume review." I had already run my resume through the outplacement service hired by my former employer, but I thought "what the heck?" The response I received wasn't a review. It was a hatchet job on my resume. Weak. Ineffective. Desperately in need of a professional resume writer. This segued into a pitch for their services, which can cost up to $3,000.

I wish I could say I'm shocked that there are scum like this preying on the very people who can least afford it, but I can't.

I got a call from her too... when I asked to reschedule our meeting and for more information about the "services" offered and a specific job she never responded... Needless to say... I will not waste my time either.  Just got a new message from Jennifer... these guys are relentless.

And by the way, BBB gives TCM International an A- rating. That was a little surprising.

Yup, they are definitely still at it. I just got the same phone call today from Erica V.

Hey Esther -- thanks for the update! Question: if you have a chance, could you ask Erica what her last name is? That'd be a big help! Thanks!

I got a call on Feb 24 (two days ago as I write this) from Elaine, who sent a follow-up email with this contact info: Elaine B.AdministratorMAP1300 Post Oak Blvd., Suite 950Houston, TX 77056Phone: (713)622-9792Fax  : (713)622-6161

I originally set up a meeting with them but fortunately I looked MAP up before going. Fortunately this article was on the front page of the Google results.

Sending an email to a potential client and not even putting your last name was the first red flag.

Just met with MAP "sr. executives" recently.  Being a sales person myself, it was not difficult to smell a sales-pitch coming from "Mike" (not his real name) within the first sentence.  I've got to say, these guys are GOOD.  I kept inquiring about what they will actually do for me and what costs would be incurred and was steered in multiple directions to veer my attention off course.  "Mike" even put up a velvet-rope stating "not everyone is a good fit for us, we're very selective",  presenting some sort of challenge that I'd want to overcome....good thing I know better.  The second I left the building something told me to be leery of this company, which prompted me to check them out online.  Run.  Run fast.

My husband met with Robert Lewis yesterday. From the first e-mail he received from these people he could tell something was 'off'.  He wasn't really clear exactly what he interviewing for in the first place. He called me after his interview and mentioned that Lewis wanted me to come to the next meeting, which I found odd, and when my husband mentioned the $5000 fee I knew it was a scam. I immediately asked my husband "You didn't sign anything did you?!" Thankfully he didn't! My husband brought home all the paperwork he was supposed to fill out (which he hates and said he didn't have time for anyway) along with their glossy company flier. Looking at the flier I couldn't find any information as to what MAP even stood for and it didn't give any specifics about what they actually do. Beside their overuse of adjectives it was filled with broad statements about 'career development', creating 'marketing campaigns', phrases about success and my favorite "Rather than dwelling on the past , we focus on the future", REALLY!? The most disturbing part is the information they want you and the spouse to fill out, yep there is a page for the spouse too. They want the spouse to answer "what are your spouse's weaknesses" and for the job seeker, "Does job hunting get you down? Explain" of course job hunting gets people down! What is there to elaborate about that?  They actually get people to write down and hand over to them on paper their weaknesses and insecurities so they can play you emotionally while they scam money from you in the next meetings. These MAP people are sick. Please keep these articles up! I am so happy I found this last night as it completely substantiated my gut feeling about these jerks. This is a fantastic resource for people trying to 'do their homework' on things like this. Many many thanks!

There is a Google Answers posting that dates back to 2005http://answers.google.com/answ...

I did the research on TCM international on BBBhttp://www.bbb.org/houston/bus...

They list the same fax number the MAP currently uses (713) 622-6161

I was there yesterday. Met with Tim Nelson. He'll tell you that MAP is over 50 years old. Hmm... Let's do some simple math. They were TCM in 2005. I'm adding numbers in my head and things aren't adding up.

I've looked at the MAP's corporate facebook sitehttp://www.facebook.com/pages/...They insist MAP is an acronym for "Management Action Programs"

If you look at Tim's LinkIn page it's Management Associated w/ Professionalshttp://www.linkedin.com/pub/ti...

You know, Tim probably isn't lying. Except there is a Bait and Switch going on.

Look at the Logos[img]http://profile.ak.fbcdn.net/hp...[img]

Getting back to that math. Yup. According to http://www.mapconsulting.com/p... they did start out in 1960. That's 51 years. But does the consulting group have any knowledge about their ad hoc Houston Branch.

Craig Malisow
Craig Malisow

Actually, Map Consulting has nothing to do with this. The "50 years old" line comes from when the company was a branch of the Bernard Haldane franchise. They appear to have officially severed ties with Bernard Haldane around 2004, but that didn't change anything. But no matter what acronym they've used, they've always dated themselves back to the origins of Haldane. It's all in the 2005 feature.

Where is the reporting here? If there is a scam, where are the comments from the scammed customers? If a reporter can dig and find ex wives or ex husbands to dish up info on employees, why can't he find customers and get the real scoop? Might be that he presents as slime and is rejected by one with values. If I am in the market to buy a Lexus and read a bunch of negative comments, does it make sense to research info on Lexus salespeople or research people who have bought the vehicle? Seems to me all this is more about a disgruntled Lexus employee or a Honda employee not liking the competition. There might be value here or there might be a scam. I don't know but I do know that this is low level reporting, and don't know if something is being protrayed accurately or someone is meanly trying to even a score.

Craig Malisow

Hi Steve -- have you read the 2005 feature? This is merely an update to that -- and you'll find plenty of comments posted under that story. Please read that and then get back to me. Thanks.

I met with them a year or so ago... fishy, scummy and completely unbelievable. When they called, it was framed as a recruiter meeting. When I got there, it was a full-on sales pitch, sleight of hand on numbers and push for my credit card.  The guy's LinkedIn page said he had worked at Pepsi, but has since been deleted. I believe his name was Patrick...
