Manuel Rodriguez, Jr.: HISD Board Member's Anti-Gay Screed

Rodriguez08_200.jpg
Manuel Rodriguez, Jr.: Hater
No one really cares much about Houston school-board elections, unfortunately, so incumbent Manuel Rodriguez Jr. was expected to win re-election because he wasn't indicted or anything.

The Houston Chronicle endorsed him for re-election.

But apparently he was nervous about his chances, or he just really, really hates gays.

A flyer sent out in the last week of the campaign has done little but alert Democrats that Rodriguez is, apparently, more right-wing bigot than non-right-wing bigot.

Under reasons to "vote no for my opponent," Rodriguez listed:

Program manager of minority male initiative at [Houston Community College.] His records show he spent years advocating for gay, bisexual lesbian, transgender rights....not kids.

The flyer also noticed the damning fact that he had been endorsed by Houston's GLBT Caucus -- and then it got subtle.

"54 years with no children," it said. "Male partner."

Oy, not to mention vey.

The Chron too kthe unusual step of retracting its endorsement:

With his hateful flier, Rodriguez perpetuates the kind of stereotypes that put our kids in danger. And he implies that all right-thinking people agree with him - an insult to his constituents, and precisely the kind of blithe, old-school homophobia that makes school hallways so treacherous.

Apparently the people so quick to throw out that ridiculous term "homophobic" don't realize tolerance is a two way street.

I wonder if David Duke still runs for elections. I hear liberals really hate him.

I don't get it, PC Police. Is anybody condemning this guy's right to spread stupid jacked-up homophobic bullshit? I didn't see where anybody said he has no "right" to say whatever he wants about people he hates. By all means, go right ahead. Just remember: freedom of speech is a two-way street, too.

Thank you! I've been going on about dumbass crackers and some people just don't get it. Freedom of speech, bitch!

It would appear you have nothing of substance to say.

There are few people more politically correct than rightwingers. Try pointing out the irrelevance of religious observance with respect to politics, and you get called "anti-Christian." Support a person's right to be who they are--for example, homosexual--and you get called "anti-family" or "anti-God" or a "moral relativist" or whatever. Point out the inconsistency of US foreign policy, and you get called "anti-American" and Ann Coulter comes out and calls you a traitor and Michelle Malkin suggests that you be thrown in prison for sedition (two pundits who have done exactly that). What is political correctness to you? The inability to speak honestly about certain issues? You guys should know all about that. We've been living with rightwing populist "PC" for 200 years.

PC Police
PC Police

Where has he stated he "hates" gay people? He hasn't.  Nothing is "homophobic", it's a ridiculous made up buzz word. Basically a race card to be flung willy nilly whenever someone doesn't embrace homosexuality with open arms.

HAHA! Yeah, it's us rightwingers who are being PC here. Uh-huh. Yep.  What you leftwingers fail to accept is diversity and tolerance applies to you as well. Labeling us with silly buzzwords just because we have differing opinions than you isn't going to work, sorry.

Anse
Anse

If you hate gay people to the point of making a person's sexuality a cause for concern with a baseless attempt to link gayness to the ability to serve on a school board, then yes, the term "homophobic" does apply. It's an attack that has no basis in logic. It assumes that being gay makes one incapable of performing the services specified for this office. If you don't consider that homophobic, then what, exactly, is homophobic?

You know what...I think you know all this. I think you and other rightwingers want us to pretend that you guys have a reasonable point. Personally, I'm tired of pretending that you have a serious point here. I'm tired of "rightwing political correctness" that attempts to paint itself as somehow relevant when the foundation of these opinions is utterly without merit.

PC Police
PC Police

Of course this will all be water under the bridge at 7 pm when he gets reelected.

PC Police
PC Police

Exactly, which brings us back to tolerance is a two way street.

So white rightwingers told you you voted for King O because he's black? Who told you that? Are you making it up, Anse? C'mon now.

You can most certainly disagree with his opinions but not automatically label him with that silly "homophobe" moniker because his thoughts don't align with your own.

Anse
Anse

So if I don't accept this view of gay people, am I intolerant?

This reminds me of white rightwingers who tell me I voted for Obama because he's black, which makes me a racist. By this logic, the only way I can ever prove I'm not a racist is to always vote for the white dude.

But getting back to the topic at hand, does this mean I can't disagree without being labeled intolerant? Does this somehow equate with an actual condemnation of the existence of gay people? How so?

1)Sure there is something on there about marriage. He listed his opponent does not have a wife but instead a male partner.

2)I think Rodriguez is telling us his opponent doesn't have any experience with kids, since he doesn't have any. He obviously doesn't embrace the homesexual lifestyle with open arms. Must he? I understand you disagree with him, good for you.

3)I was referring to whoever made up the silly "homophobia" word, not you personally.

Wyatt
Wyatt

First, there's nothing on there about marriage.

Second, I'm afraid of diversity because I disagree that being gay is a detriment to holding office, which is clearly what Manuel is saying? You're like a little kid who keeps asking "why?" over and over again. That makes no sense. I'm not afraid of his ideas and I don't think he shouldn't be allowed to have them. I simply disagree.

Third, I didn't make up any words, so I'm not sure what you're referencing.

PC Police
PC Police

The Democrat Rodriguez is obviously pro traditional marriage. Why are you being a diversiphobe? (I can make up words too)

Wyatt
Wyatt

You're willfully ignoring the incredibly obvious subtext. Actually, I'm not sure you can call it subtext when he lists as a separate point under his opponents detriments, "Male partner." That doesn't have anything to do with not spending enough time helping kids.

PC Police
PC Police

He's stating he's not the better candidate because he doesn't have any kids of his own and has chosen to champion gay rights instead of helping kids.

Wyatt
Wyatt

It's actually a commonly discussed paradox - being tolerant makes you intolerant of intolerance.

So forget the word tolerant. You're free to believe that it's all right to suggest someone isn't fit to run for office because he's gay, but I think you're wrong.

PC Police

I see you still don't understand it.
