The guy who started shooting a rifle at the Occupy Houston site last evening has been charged with aggravated assault against a public servant, Houston police say.

The shooter was injured by return fire from police, but is in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries.

Joshua Anthony Twohig, 21, of Houston went to Tranquility Park about 5:15 p.m. last evening with a rifle and stood on the bridge that spans the pond there, police say.

Two HPD officers were flagged down and entered the park, hearing gunshots.

Says HPD:

Officers moved closer to the suspect and took cover behind a four-foot high concrete wall. They began giving the suspect verbal commands to drop the weapon. Rather than doing so, the suspect fired the rifle into the pond and then raised the rifle and pointed it at his head as if intending to commit suicide. The suspect began screaming to officers "shoot me, shoot me."

Someone began shooting video of the incident, HPD says. The video was not released but police described what was on itthis way:

Both officers are seen taking cover and shouting commands to the suspect, who made hostile advances toward the officers before they discharged their weapons. When struck the first time, the suspect went down to the ground. He then stood up again and reached to pick up his rifle before he was wounded again.

Twohig was not known to Occupy Houston participants.
