Ashton Kutcher Tweeting Wisdom Lost to America Because He Hadn't Heard About Joe Paterno

The fail whale was strong in this one.
Weep, America.

Ashton Kutcher is no longer tweeting.

He says he has handed management of his Twitter account, which has eight million followers, over to his media team.

Why? Because he is apparently the only self-described football fan not currently on a radio-silence special ops mission in the mountains of Afghanistan who hasn't heard about the Joe Paterno mess.

Kutcher tweeted Wednesday night after hearing about Paterno's firing: "How do you fire Jo Pa? #insult #noclass as a hawkeye fan I find it in poor taste."

Paterno, of course, is embroiled in a massive controversy over how much he chose to cover up about a key assistant's serial rapes and sexual assaults of young boys. Paterno says he passed on allegations to superiors who did nothing, but anyone who knows the legendary coach's pull in Pennsylvania knows he has no superiors at PSU.

Anyway, Kutcher says after he posted the tweet, he got the rest of the story from ESPN, so he took the tweet down. "As an advocate in the fight against child sexual exploitation, I could not be more remorseful for all involved in the Penn St. case," he tweeted.

(His "advocacy," in terms of the claims he makes about sex-trafficking, has led him to cross ways with Village Voice Media.)

Kutcher says of the Paterno tweet:

I quickly went back on my twitter account and found a hailstorm of responses calling me an "idiot" and several other expletives that I've become accustom to hearing for almost anything I post. I quickly retracted and deleted my previous post, however that didn't seem enough to satisfy people's outrage at my misinformed post. I truly am sorry if I offended anyone and more over am going to take action to ensure that it doesn't happen again.

A collection of over 8 million followers is not to be taken for granted. I feel responsible for delivering an informed opinion and not spreading gossip or rumors through my twitter feed.

While he says he will "continue to express myself" through Twitter, it just won't be the same.
