2011 Houston Press Music Awards Showcase

As it has always done since its inception in 1989, the Houston Press Music Awards offers the most bang for your local music dollar anywhere. Where else are you gonna see pop-rockers like Otenki alongside verified blues legends like Texas Johnny Brown and Little Joe Washington? Staples like DRUM and the Zydeco Dots alongside up-and-comers like the Beans and Hollywood Floss? Nowhere, that's where.

For the first time, this year's HPMAs will be taking place in central and east downtown, a swath of sound extending from the House of Blues north to the Home Plate Grill and east to Warehouse Live. Bands will be playing from two to ten, and after that five of the city's top DJs will be spinning at Jet Lounge, keeping the party soaring deep into the cool winter night.

Sadly, Press music editor Chris Gray won't be there. He's still too early in his recovery from the serious heart attack he suffered late last month. But even if the man himself can't make it, this event is a testament to his hard work and dedication. This is his very lifeblood, the driving force behind one of the most astounding work ethics in music journalism. Simply put, the dude rocks, and so does his hometown. Read up for yourself here and then make sure you get your butt downtown this weekend.
