HPD Sgt. Roy Marquez, DWI cop
A veteran Houston DWI cop has been charged with DWI after he ran a red light and tests showed he had a .127 blood-alcohol, according to court documents.

Sgt. Roy Marquez, 37, was arrested on his birthday Sunday after a non-injury accident at the intersection of Red Bluff and the Beltway 8 frontage road in Pasadena.

He told cops he had had two beers at a friend's house, the documents show, but officers detected "the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from his breath," along with "red, watery eyes, slurred speech and a sway."

Marquez, a ten-year HPD veteran who serves in traffic enforcement dealing with DWIs, refused a breath test.

"Due to the fact that Marquez was a police officer," the court documents say, the investigating officer "asked if he had a weapon on him or in his vehicle. Marquez advised [the officer] that he had a handgun in the driver's-side door pocket of his wrecked vehicle."

The gun was actually found on the dashboard, the court documents say.

He's been suspended with pay pending an internal investigation.

Wow, an off-duty cop who drinks and gets arrested, just like a regular citizen. Who knew? All along, I thought they worked 24/7 with no better agenda than to take a bullet for me, show up for every stupid call and work for almost nothing. You mean they have a life and act stupid like normal people? Something's wrong with that picture. Cops are like, preists -- they're suppose to be perfect, right?

The officer deserves his due process like anybody else being charged with a DWI.  However, with that being said he should be terminated from HPD and lose his peace officer's license.  How can you trust someone like this to uphold the law?

He's in the Houston Patrolman Union.  regardless of what the event is, there are rules in place by union contract that dictate what the the steps are taken and in what order.  It's not HPD, it's the union.

If the cop doesn't blow to prove he's innocent, why would any of the rest of us?

Every DWI cop says "they always say 'only two beers.'"

So this was a Pasadena police arrest. You have to wonder what would have happened if it had been an HPD case.

Now Gary Blankenship and the Police Union will spring into action to get the guy off and save his job. A good lawyer and the right friends can do wonders!

Suspended with pay? So, other than going on his record, he drinks, drives, and get a paid vacation?

Apparently a BAC of .127 isn't guilty enough :)

Uhh, being outwardly drunk while driving is a pretty cut-and-dry case, yeah? What is there to prove?

I'll remember that next time someone ends up in jail for DWI and has to post bail to get out. Innocent until proven guilty is great, too bad the Justice System applies it selectively.
