Heights Burglary Ring Smashed; Four Area Youths in Custody & Their Facebook Bragging Exposed

Nathaniel Cook: One of four arrested.
An alert area resident and diligent Central Patrol officers have taken in a quartet of Heights miscreants they say broke into four area homes on Tuesday.

Police say Nathaniel Dean Cook, Octavius Demone Harris, Eli Marquis Ortiz and Everardo Segura broke into and stole items from three homes on Oxford Street and another on Beverly, all within school/work hours. All have been charged with two felony counts of burglary of a habitation and a felony count apiece of engaging in organized criminal activity.

Police say they would case the homes by looking in mailboxes and noting when there were no cars in the driveway. They would then knock on the door, and if they got no answer, would gain entry by either crawling in through an unlocked window or kicking in the back door. In many of these types of cases, HPD spokesman John Cannon says, one or more serves as lookouts, another will drive the car and the other will do the actual breaking in.

Police are investigating the possibility that the crew could be responsible for as many as 30 similar burglaries in the area dating back to April.

Their downfall came when a witness saw them taking items from a home on Beverly Street; that person called cops, who were able to apprehend all of them without incident. Numerous items believed to be taken from the homes were allegedly found on their persons or in their homes.

"Another day another Dollar," Segura Facebooked on October 13. Three weeks before that, he had this to say: "We dont even count the money no more we jst blow it spend it all up we do even count the money we jst throw it." He celebrated this week's 18th birthday in the Harris County Jail. He was already on probation for a felony theft conviction he racked up this summer.

"H.O.E...Heights Ova Everythang! It aint no click just anotha moto!" enthused 17-year-old Ortiz on September 30, the same day he offered up this thug wisdom: "My true potnas just can't be found nomo! Das why my moto is fuck friends.. My only dawg is Benjamin Franklin! Huhhh already.."

Everardo Segura.jpg
Everardo Segura
Eighteen-year-old Cook, who either dropped out or was kicked out of both Waltrip and Reagan, calls himself "Big Cook Da Heights Hustla" and refers to himself as a "nigga" even though he's white. He's already been convicted of evading arrest in big boy court despite graduating from the juvie leagues in June.

All Rhodes scholars in the making...

Cannon says Central Patrol's officers went above and beyond in apprehending these suspects, but his hat is also off to the citizen who phoned in this week's incident.

"We really wouldn't have caught 'em this week if it hadn't been for that witness," he says. "People hear us say, 'You need to be our eyes and ears' all the time, and how that works was never more apparent than in this case."

If any of these mugshots prods your memory towards some suspicious incident, Cannon says to call HPD's burglary division at 713-308-0900.

He also advises that people buy alarm systems, or failing that get a dog or bolster security on your back door with a double-bolt. If a stay-at-home neighbor can help by bringing in your mail and/or newspapers, that would also be a deterrent, he says.

Reasons 1-100 why I won't send my kids to HISD are all the tough talking cowards who spell worse than my 3 year old. Good grief. Please learn a few things. 1- the difference between "your" and "you're", 2- the difference between "they're", "there", and "their", and 3- when making a direct or implied threat over the Internet, law enforcement can and will easily find you by your IP address and prosecute you. Unless, of course, you are typing from the public library or school (both of which I highly doubt the illiterates among us frequent).

I believe people deserve justice when acts of crime are harshly committed. I also believe in a ''big break'' or ''wake-up call'' when for most of your life things have gone wrong and you just want at least one more chance. Here are the criminal histories:

OCTAVIUS HARRISAddress is 909 W. 10TH STREET HOUSTON TX 77008Probably lives with Grandma.  Looking at Google maps, looks like he has small old 1930s house surrounded by very expensive new construction.  Definitely not the "hood".  His house, in fact, is the same value as mine on HCAD.

Even scarier than these kids' crimes is the amount of young people chiming in to defend their actions.  "Watch yo back bitch!" and "Fuck you muthafucka".  Nice English and morals.  I'll spare you kids the effort of trying to describe who I might be.  To you, I'm an old (30 year old), cracker (white) bitch (female).  I must tell you that not every white person has had a fairy tale life.  Everyone has had SOME bad stuff happen to them.  Over my short 30 years, I was nearly kidnapped, have been raped, had a miscarriage, and had two preemie kids in the NICU for several weeks.  This does not give me a ticket to steal other people's property.  I put myself through college by working 40 hours a week and going to school full time.  There were times I ate Ramen noodles for several weeks straight because I couldn't afford to eat anything else. Yet I never ONCE thought of stealing from anyone.

What I had to do to push through my hard times and succeed, was to THROW AWAY THE CRUTCHES.  Everyone has a crutch or an excuse as to why he or she can't be successful like: My mom was on drugs.  My dad was sexually abusive.  My teacher hated me.  I never got to have a Christmas tree.  Someone called me the "n" word.  I got fired from my job.  Etc. etc. etc.

All of those examples are sad situations and it doesn't make it right, but eventually, you need to own up to the fact that YOU are responsible for YOURSELF.  You can't control anyone else, but YOU have the choice to do the right thing many times a day.  TRUE CHARACTER IS DOING THE RIGHT THING WHEN YOU KNOW NOBODY IS LOOKING.  It's easy to fall back on your crutch, but the truly successful people in life are those that have succeeded IN SPITE OF those challenges.  I know people in every race and age group (including in my own extended family) that have problems with accountability and taking responsibility for the consequences of their OWN actions, so I'm not excluding anyone.

Hopefully one day you all will realize that the people whose homes were burglarized lost more than their material possessions.  They've lost their sense of peace.  Their kids now have nightmares and wake up screaming in the middle of the night because they thought they heard someone in the house.  They now are terrified to come home to a place that was once their sanctuary.

It's time to stop calling these guys your friends.  If they had the opportunity to sell a "friend" down the river to save their own tail, trust me that they would in a heartbeat.

It seems as though maybe you have not had very good examples in parents, neighbors, or teachers, but I hope that there has been someone in your life who has been a good role model for you.  A life of crime is not cool.  There ARE other options.  Be accountable and find them (even if it means not having an iPad and eating Ramen noodles for a year).

I'll leave you with some of my favorite quotes:

I recently had some property taken from my premises in the immediate vicinity of where these miscreants were operating.  I now carry a loaded firearm on my person and in my vehicle at all times.  These scumbags are lucky they were caught and did not come back to my house because my policy now is to protect my property to the maximum extent permitted by the law (which can include the use of deadly force, in certain circumstances).  Maybe they will get some sense knocked in the cockamammy skulls while in the slammer.  If not, someone is going to send them home in body bags next time they try this foolishness.

Per Facebook, Cook was rooming with Ortiz on Darling Street in Cottage Grove, which is a transitional neighborhood with condos overlaying barrio elements. Lots of times, the addresses in the CJC system are old, and poor folks move all the time. Every time Octavious Harris got arrested he had a different address.  Also, it's come to light that these guys claimed to be a gang called the Heights Eight-Ball Posse. Their tag looks like this: H8$. I've been told it's on the MKT bike trail and at that park just east of the Shepherd/Durham overpasses.

For cryin' out loud! You would've thought based on previous inserts in this blog that these kids were falsely accused and were simply hanging out at Fiesta and were arrested by HPD. Thanks Spn'n RECORDZ for bringing the true facts to the blog--at least now there's no question as to who these guys are. Glad to know they're off the streets. It's really sad the day has come that people dont feel safe and theft requires people to consider defense actions that may require taking a life. In this case, it would be young teenagers who still have similac on their breath and haven't even begun to experience life. Hopefully they will learn from this experience and later become better people. If not, they will rot in jail until the end of days

Walk a mile in their shoes? Why would I walk in their stolen shoes? Stop making excuses for their behavior. You sound pathetic defending them or your a thief too. We have every right to be pissed off and I will be calling the D.A to ensure they get the most time possible! Be glad their in jail as I surely wish I was home to defend my property in the TEXAS way. Then we'd see who was "scarry."  As for visiting them in the County, no need, since I'll be getting the license plates they will be making over the next 6-8 years from the DMV.

I dispute the ''bums'' part. I know them personally and they weren't not lazy people by any means neccessary. Some Yes their records and histories show that they were accussed of crimes and that they made decisions in life that were questioned or questionable but you don't truly know their lifestyle or the way the were raised. If they commited these crimes then i think they did it to to teach some people some lessons or just be a rebel all together. I may not have personal items taken from me, but I have friends that I was close to, and they were like family to me and losing that is nothing compared to losing something sitting on a counter or the closet of a house.

I can't argue against your concern. I don't know how you and your family and even your community is feeling right now. I don't even know how yours and other peoples houses were even able to get broken into to began with. In a watched-supervised community like the Heights, how did that happen? I agree with you that protecting your property is a must but possibly rendering the idea that you could ''kill somebody'' or ''shoot somebody'' isn't worth your child's eye. You might have the right to bear arms but how will your kid or even wife with be able to bare with that? Violence is never the answer, unless violence is directly at you. I Don't think these guys were ever accused of having a gun on them or trying to hurt somebody in a physical manner. If they did it, then money was the motive and nothing else. There are ways to use physical contact to ''detain'' somebody rather than hurt somebody even if you are in the right.

TM: I for one am glad you can influence these young minds, as aside from being upset about the violation of my home—it truly disturbing that 4 or more teens are out of commission. There's plenty of blame to point in all directions but at the end of the day, it’s a sad affair. I might add, no one is looking for blood, but via the Bill of Rights I do have the right to bear arms (using them is different.) When someone, be it, these kids or someone else breaks into my home to cause harm I safely assume they are there to do me, my children or loved-ones harm. Protecting them is my highest responsibility, not machismo. You should also know that we just happen to have these four kids in custody—so naturally we have them to blame. Prior to their arrest, anyone and everyone I saw in my neighborhood mail-man, lawn service, paperboys were all suspects and given a questionable second glance. After all, these kids give me the feeling that they can/would commit violence if provoked—I don’t think the tats assist much with a softer, kinder edge. Unfortunately, for them the wake-up call should've occurred several burglaries ago rather than embolden them to reach new heights by breaking into 4 homes on the Tuesday they were apprehended. Trust me, I prefer not to have this discussion period, however keeping this blog alive is what enables me to cope and express the frustration of my family, neighbors and community. This isn’t proud boasting, a Salem witch hunt or a chance to send some falsely accused kids to the guillotine, this is a community concern highlighting the results of troubled youth and how to keep our safety, sanity and our hard-earned homes as a place of serenity.

Thomas Moreno
Thomas Moreno

I will be a role model and express my loyalty to them as friends and I will give them my opinions on how to better themselves even right now as they are in jail. Even once the case has a conclusion. Maybe sometimes in life we fail as family members or friends in not communicating our concerns or what we think could ''better'' ourselves or others. If you broke into my house and i caught you I would protect my property in a easy and less non-violent manner. I wouldn't have to shoot you or get blood on my hands to feel like a Macho Man just to feel like i stopped a crime. All I am saying is with this media exposure and the pain and regret they must be feeling and downward spiral they are going thru, why not us a society work together and be good citizens and try to help these boys in making sure they would never think about doing this again. I would give them probation and see how they do and if they mess up, then truly they don't want to better themselves. This can be their ''wake up call!'' It's not a matter of Freeworld Vs Jail Vs Death. It's a matter of do you want to better yourself or not and do people want to help or keep the social frenzy going.

Themainchapter
Themainchapter

Just so I understand, you're saying these kids--since they are not bums, or lazy, are only accused of crimes and made bad decisions to steal private property to teach me a lesson--merely acting-out as a social deviant against the bourgeoisie? And yet, due to their unique backgrounds, the so-called, "hard knock life", etc...it's okay for them to act like this? We all have lost loved-ones, but as a result, I'm not going to climb through a window and steal something and later justify it as "teaching these working people a lesson." In fact, you look like you're a responsible, working person--yet I severely doubt you'd appreciate or tolerate some other kids you don't know-- breaking into your home and stealing your belongings. So for the teachable moment here, Thomas what would you have us do? Should they be released and try it steal from me again and I catch them, what should I do? Shoot or let them go because of their troubled backgrounds knowing they were simply trying to teach me a lesson.

I would think you would be more interested in calling them, going to see them and slapping them around a few times to straighten them out. Be a role model and express to them--how there is no retirement plan for their line of work only two options: Jail or Death especially at the express rate they are headed.

"It's not like he is a murderer, child molester, or rapist" Yes, your right, at least NOT YET. He's definitely headed in the right direction. His third strike will be soon enough to make him a career criminal.

Good!  I wish you would put $100,000 into his commissary but actually they only allow $100 per week (liar). So long as he's enjoying all the, lets see, peanut butter crackers, doritos, ramen noodles, and snickers he can eat from behind bars. I wish him all the high fives, jail props and prison respect he can get. But no matter how you attempt to hide his/your pain, freedom is something he must never have again.
