Jerry Eversole: Not available to be kicked around anymore.
County Commissioner Jerry Eversole, who has long battled accusations of corruption and cronyism, has resigned his seat effective the end of this month.

He sent a letter to County Judge Ed Emmett this afternoon.

"It has been my absolute pleasure to serve the voters of Harris County since 1991," he wrote. "I am very proud of all we've accomplished for the county and its residents in those many years."

Part of what he accomplished, of course, was winning a mistrial in his corruption case earlier this year, in which his attorney Rusty Hardin convinced jurors that all the elaborate gifts Eversole received from people doing business with the county were just a result of friends being friends.

His retrial is scheduled for next month.
