Bye-bye Y.
The 31-year-old Westland branch of the YMCA, on Fondren in southwest Houston, is closing at the end of the month.

YMCA spokesperson Ann Herlocher tells Hair Balls the organization got an unsolicited offer for the building and land from the Westbury Christian School.

"We had to consider it," she says, because of "declining membership and increasing operating costs."

There are two other Ys within six miles of Westland, she says, and members will automatically be transferred to the West Orem Y.

Westbury Christian intends to renovate the building and use it as an athletic complex, Herlocher said. The property includes a pool and a large field, usually used for soccer or baseball.

Bummer.  I learned to swim at this Y.  It was also where I voted in my first presidential election.  The age of the YMCA in the article is wrong.  It is close to 41 years old.  I did water babies there with my mom and I was born in 1972.  According to my mother, the YMCA was built with the neighborhood behind it was developed, thus the reason Maplewood West did not build a neighborhood pool.
