50 Reasons Texas Is the Best State in America

Categories: Texas

Ain't bragging if it's true.
Gawker has been stirring things up by putting out a list of The Worst 50 States in America, with Number One being the worst of the worst. (Amazingly, Manhattan-based Gawker picked New York to be least worst.)

We expected Texas to be Top Three material at least, but instead the Lone Star State came in at 13. (Yay!?)

The Texan ego is as big as the state, and no matter how much you point out to them that, uh, hey what about all this extremely terrible stuff, they will not listen. If you guys would just shut up about it for a while, the rest of us might like you a little more.

No can do, Gawker. Here are 50 things that make Texas great (IMPORTANT NOTE: This list contains no mention of the Dallas Cowboys. We just can't bring ourselves to do that.):

50. Port Arthur: A gritty Golden Triangle refinery town that somehow produced Janis Joplin, Jimmy Johnson, Robert Rauschenberg and UGK.

49. Schlitterbahn is the greatest waterpark in America, and it makes excellent use of its Hill Country surroundings.

48. Chuck Norris. He doesn't sleep; he waits. And he's a Texas Ranger, dammit.

47. Dublin Dr Pepper -- for those people who think regular old Dr Peppers aren't Texan enough.

46. We gave the world the Quaid brothers, who have given us some great performances both off and on the screen. And we just don't mean Randy with the off-screen stuff, either.

BigBendPostcard1.jpg
Big bend is not like the Big Thicket.
45. You are never very far from a Whataburger.

44. Texas has produced some of the world's best music, but Bob Wills is still the king.

43. The stunning ecological diversity of the state, from the arid canyons of Big Bend to the shadowy forest of the Big Thicket.

42. No state income tax, suckaz.

41. Texas absolutely kicks ass in producing wind energy, and it doesn't get much greener than that.

willie082411.jpg
Willie Nelson can do no wrong.

40. Willie Nelson. Beloved by the most stonered Austin dreamer to the most rigid born-again Baptist, and no one bats an eye when he racks up another weed arrest.

39. "Failure is not an option." Yeah, it was never actually said by Gene Kranz, but it summed up generations of work at NASA that hopefully will not end with the shuttle era.

38. Friday Night Lights. Not the book, movie or show -- the real thing. High school football in small-town Texas is something everyone should experience at least once.

37. Tex-Mex. Comfort food, hangover cure, drunken latenight scarfing: It has many purposes, all of them delicious.

36. Crossing the Pedernales near the LBJ Ranch is a classic Hill Country moment and it's always redolent of history both happy and tragic.

35. You want music festivals, SXSW, Austin City Limits and Summerfest are hard to beat.

34. When you say you're from Texas, no one in the world needs to ask where that is.

33. From a windswept dustbowl like Lubbock, Buddy Holly unleashed pop rock on the world that is still the basis for new and great music.

32. The cheapest and best oysters in the world are plentiful from the Gulf.

31. Watching families in their Sunday best getting the wildflower pictures that generations have taken before them.

You had me going until I saw Tex-Mex was nearly at the end while Beyonce was near the top.  What a load!  I bet most people will not know who the heck she is in 10 years.  Just like Selena...who?  BTW, the crazy politicos keep Texas free from a state income tax!

You can say all you want but in reality and across the world California is the best and the most popular state of them all for a foreigner san francisco, LA, chicago and NY would be the cities he would definitely visit... and you dont need 50 explanations..  largest US state economy, 7th largest economy in the world, technology and entertainment hub, Hollywood, Silicon Valley, LA, San Fran, San Diego, Sacramento, Disney, Universal, Google, facebook, apple, intel, twitter etc..yosemite, lake tahoe, death valley, redwoods, beaches, mountains, most movies and music are produced here the most number of amusement parks and national parks, and all these are found here, America is culturally popular and powerful because of culture produced in California.

@Calboy You've got to be kidding!!!! You've got cities going broke, VERY business unfriendly, highest state income tax, high gasoline tax, carbon emissions tax, one of the highest unemployment rates, highest paid teachers - lowest performing schools in nation, more than twice the state debt of any other state, 60% of all students receive free or reduced lunch expense, highest small business failure rate, and on, and on. Yeah, your state is so awesome, that's why so many Californians move to Texas to buy homes and live.

@JohnBossi @Calboy  yeah, fuck you callboy!! you say California is a hub for the entertainment and technology industries??...yeah, well it's also a hub for assholes....I went to school in Boston (*B* Strong!!), studied abroad in London, and have spent a decent amount of time in many others cities in the U.S, and within the last year and a half that I have spent in LA I have never met so many self-involved, douchebag, pricks in my life!!  so frankly, I don't know what you think you are bragging about, lol.... it sounds to me like you'd prefer to measure the worth of a place in its tourist attractions, rather than the quality of its people... so for that I can really only feel sorry for you.... there is a reason we Texans all love it so much, and it has more to do with the other, every day, fellow Texans that inhabit our great state than whatever amusement park or pop culture phenom you are boasting this five minutes. Grow up.

@JohnBossi @Calboy California is WAY too expensive, but you should review their overall budget..things have vastly improved.  Not a California person, just correcting a misconception.

lmao.. Beyonce should've been #1!..... but let's talk about the best city now.. Houston!.. most diverse city in the COUNTRY.. even the ambience is diverse, you can go to a fancy restaurant, a restaurant that specializes in cuisine from all over the world, or a cheap fast food restaurant.. you can spend your time doing leisure filled activities, but it's also easy to get a job, or have an exciting day (I suggest Kemah Boardwalk if you're willing to make the drive)... it's really what you make of it.. and I wouldn't mind doing bad things to that blogger that named Houston the 2nd most boring city in the WORLD, just because it's HOT here.. what sense does that make?... that prissy little b****

I LOVE so many of your observations.  Good to laugh.  However, no mention of Kinky Friedman??  Can't get more Texas quirky!  Or how we all just have conversations with everyone, everywhere, whether we know one another or not?

Don't forget where Texas came from...Tennessee. Texas is great, I'm not saying that, but if it weren't for the greatness of Tennessee, Texas would honestly be habla-ing espanol. Our whole state namesake comes from the fact that we sent guys to fight for y'all in the Alamo. You're welcome. In sum, Texas is great, Tennessee is great. Bad things about Texas: surprising lack of real, southern sweet tea, compared to more southeastern states, heat, lack of trees and rivers as a general rule (come see some of those in Chattanooga-beautiful!). Bad things about Tennessee: less diverse in some parts, colder winters, and a few other things.

Remember your roots!

@JonnyZ Wow you have NOT been to Texas. You don't have any idea what you are talking about! LOL!

Ya'll forgot about giving a shoutout to Arlington, home of the Texas Rangers and the new Cowboys stadium. (I like 10 min away from the stadiums and proud of it!)

Schlitterbahn is in Kansas City, too.... See, this is the problem with Texas. You all think everything is unique to here, because you never leave.

Some things to add:  Texas BBQ (unlike any other BBQ anywhere),  need I mention Rudy's BBQ?,  Oktoberfest, Eyeore's Birthday Party, the Texas Medical Center (largest medical center in the world - with over 46 institutions and 73,600 employees), shopping at the Houston Galleria, Chuy's, and last but certainly not least, the friendliest and most kind-hearted people you will ever meet.  I live in California now, and I miss Texas so much, and will most definitely return one day, for good. People who've never lived in Texas will never "get it" unless they've lived there and experienced Texas for themselves.  Texas is in my soul.

Jim Washburn

I'm truly sorry you have to be in [shudder] California.  Come home soon.

Thanks, Jim.  I'm working on it..... : )

One more thing to add - Austin is the birthplace of Whole Foods!

THere's an old saying.  "Never ask a fellow where he's from.  If he's from Texas, he'll tell you.  If he's not, don't embarrass him."  Love it or leave it.
