Houston Commuters: Some of the Earliest Risers in Texas
You know what sucks? Getting up early to commute to work. And we do a lot of it in Houston.
WHAT time is it?
The Business Journals website has crunched numbers from the Census' American Community Survey and ranked 500-plus communities according to how many commuters leave home from 5 a.m. to 7 a.m.
Houston only comes in 77th nationally, but in Texas we kick ass: Take away the military in Killeen with their crazy hours, and only Beaumont-Port Arthur outdoes us in early birds.
The ACS says Houston (and Sugar Land and Baytown) has 2.6 million commuters; almost one-third, or 858,000 of them, leave the house by 7 a.m.
Another 64,000 leave by 9 a.m., by which time frankly you should have your butt out of bed.
The Houston area comes in just ahead of Athens, Texas, which of course is the Black-Eyed Pea Capital of the Country it says.
Is there any feeling more satisfying than rising in the pre-dawn hours to go fight traffic? Other than having your fingernails pulled out with pliers?
