C.J. McElroy, a Clear Creek High graduate who had committed to the University of Houston, has instead decided to give it a go at professional baseball.

"We have learned from the McElroy family that C.J. will be signing a contract to play professional baseball full time with the St. Louis Cardinals," says UH football coach Kevin Sumlin in a statement released by the athletic department. "He is a very talented young man and we wish him all the best."

A two-sport star, the five-foot ten-inch, 180-pound McElroy planned to play receiver for the Cougars' football team and in the outfield for the baseball squad. The recruiting ranking service MaxPreps.com ranked him as the 100th top football recruit in Texas while Baseball America had him slotted as the 31st best prospect in the Lone Star State.

McElroy, who is the son of ex-MLB hurler Chuck McElroy, was drafted in the third round of the 2011 Major League Baseball Draft.
