And Back Come the Red-Light Cameras, Starting...NOW!!

Back in business
Mayor Annise Parker announced today that the city will go back to enforcing red-light camera tickets immediately.

Voters had tossed out the cameras in a referendum, but the company that operates them said they had a contractual deal to make their dirty cash from people who ever so slightly go through "on pink." (They didn't mention toying with the yellow-to-red timing, but we guess they didn't want to brag.)

Parker said the cameras will go on again while the city appeals a recent court decision in favor of the company, American Traffic Solutions.

"This is a difficult decision," Parker said. "I have a responsibility to represent the interests of the voters, but I also have a responsibility to abide by the judge's ruling."

Saying the city just went through "a very painful" budget-cutting process, she said, "We simply don't have the millions they claim we would owe for violating the court decision and our contractual obligation to American Traffic Solutions (ATS). Therefore, I have decided the fiscally prudent path to take is to turn the cameras back on while also seeking a second chance for the voters in the courts."

A federal judge ruled the referendum should not have been put on the ballot because the initiative to put it there came too late.

"It is not the prerogative of City Council to decide which laws it wants to follow," Parker said. "We had no choice in putting the referendum on the ballot last fall. However, we do have the ability to settle this question for future City Councils and the public."

The contract with ATS expires in 2014.

Bottom line: Get ready to be hit in the pocketbook again, people.

Update: New info from the mayor's office: The cameras will be turned on, but citations until testing is done on the equipment.

And ATS' statement:

In accordance with Mayor Parker's announcement, ATS is working to immediately reactivate and fully functionalize Houston's red light safety cameras. We look forward to resuming work with the city on this important public safety initiative. As we have seen over the course of the last several years, Houston's red light safety program has been successful in changing driver behavior, reducing collisions and ultimately saving lives.

Your not saving any lives. More drivers get into accidents to try to avoid getting a ticket. So drivers than slam on their breaks and than causing to be hit in the rear end.  Also according to high way commission they say there has to be a X amount of seconds between yellow and red due to the speed limit that is present. Than the lights also have to consider the real time traffic movement vs. the posted speed. I know of a Federal Judge here in Long island New York, who stopped 100% fully at a red light and than made his turn on red , and 3 weeks later he got the ticket. He said just bec there was someone is the car to back him up on what occurred. That he just got screwed and he mentioned to me, that there is no way to fight these red light tickets. Its really getting bad.  Also why is each state out sourcing such a processes like this.  NY sends it to OH, and they than send New Yorkers the tickets. That is appsolutely nuts sounding. Why aren't each state handing these tickets on their own?? That is very simple, because as usual we like to either, outsource things like this, or get other states where the min. wage pay rate is much lower compared to where the ticket is being issued/handle in that state. California finally put a stop to all red light camera in LA. Why is that? I wonder, because finally some smart people said that these camera are pulling complete scams and nonsense and its not fair to the general public anymore. If Police officers weren't so lazy and insanely over paid, than maybe they would pull more people over and hand out more tickets.  If i had the right to be able to hand out tickets for a state, I literally no joke, would be able to hand out over 100 justifiable tickets per a single day, by literally pulling people over and going into shopping centers and handing out handicap tickets left and right.  People here in America don't think we drive on the right hand side of the road anymore. Its called I'll do whatever the "F" I want do bec I'm so called above the rules and regulations.  It has become so sicking and our kids are going to than learn the same actions etc.  Also when i was younger during Drivers Ed, they taught us to pull into the middle of the intersection and wait until you can make that turn safely and properly.  I also feel that everyone should have a road exam every 7 yrs lets say that cost only 15 dollars.   Its just getting out of control with police officers, and them just doing whatever they want , hand out PBA cards to their own family members, and such but to no one else. That is another issue which is completely unfair to all of the other individuals out there on the road etc. I say enough is enough. Lets join together and get them to put a full stop to this problems.

I'm just curious - does COH have an obgligation to actually write the ticket?

I think the City should publish the contract and let every houston lawyer have a crack at finding a way to beat it.

If studies show fewer accidents, maybe creating a danger could be used to void the contract.

Why not protest by not taking the street the red-light cameras are even on :) That's what I do, I don't take the exit in Jones road in Jersey village (just the next exit down) and I avoid the red light camera :P *Then we can say they cause more traffic jams" LOL :) Now I can't take the Post Oak , Westhiemer, or the San Felipe Exit from 610 now :( boo

Guess it's time to break out the PhotoBlocker spray...I am not associated with the following web site in any way but I'm very tempted to buy some of their product.

However, if you spray your plate with that stuff, than EZ-Pass will not work. Tha'ts the only issues you can run into. Its not illegal to make sprays like photo blocker. Its just illegal to use, lol. Just like a Radar machine.

I've got a better idea, how we not pay any red light camera tickets at all. If we get a ticket by an officer, go ahead and pay it, but if it is from one of these cameras .,, don't pay it at all.

Or if you must, send them Monopoly money...

Rock on...... Send the stupid camera companies monopoly money. I'm with you 100%.

Can someone answer how anyone is supposed to call for, organize, and have a citywide vote within 30 days of the passing of an ordinance? Is it even possible? I think not.

My vote for mayor will not be thwarted.

No way this was a tough decision. The judge basically gave Parker an "out". Of course she wants the revenue from this. Who cares what the voters think...

ATS is owned by Goldman Sachs! ATS and Redflex are draining local economies of hundreds of millions of dollars each year. This is money that could be spent at local businesses that create jobs. Obvioulsy, ya got a bunch of Nazis running your city.

Run the light, pay the fine. I'm tired of waiting halfway through a green light to enter an intersection.

May I also suggest laying on the horn when those idiots try to sneak through the light. It really scares the crap out of them sometimes. LOL
