The Wildfires Come to Houston

It didn't look like this.
The city of Houston proper has pretty much avoided the wildfires and grassfires that have been afflicting Texas, but today was different.

The Houston Fire Department spent 90 minutes putting out a grassfire between Old Galveston Road and the Gulf Freeway just north of Clear Lake City Boulevard. No injuries were reported and no structures were damaged, which makes it the best kind of grassfire to have.

The call came in about 12:30 p.m. and, HFD says, "three to four acres of grass and some trees burned."

The cause of the fire has not been determined, but HFD says cigarette butts were found near the burn area.

Cigarettes "should be discarded in a safe manner and not by being thrown out a window or tossing them on the ground," HFD said. "Outdoor fires may also be caused by dragging chains on vehicles pulling trailers, car fires and power tools such as welders and chainsaws, which emit sparks."
