Rick Perry Asking Other Governors to Pray And Fast For A Day, Including Chris Christie (Updated)

Fast for a day, Chris Christie: the power of Perry compels you!
There are few t hings more annoying than the stranger who asks you if you've accepted Jesus, but Governor Rick Perry has became That Guy with a letter to the 49 other state leaders in the U.S.

He's asking them to come to Houston for a day of prayer and fasting. Yes, he's asking New Jersey governor (and potential 20112 GOP presidential rival) Chris Christie to fast for a day. Christie is a man who had a state car take him the 100 yards from his helicopter to the seats at his son's baseball game, although to be fair to him he did not make the car stop for food on the way. On the other hand, maybe it was already well-stocked. We don't think Haley Barbour is too much into the fasting, for that matter.

Anyway, Perry's letter (reported by the Dallas Morning News, but it's behind a subscriptiion paywall) lists the following reasons why the 50 governors need to pray:

4. "Natural disasters"
We've gone through this before, when Perry told Texans to pray for rain. Dude, you're praying to the God who caused all these natural disasters, according to your theology. He gets a kick out of it, apparently. If you insist, though, here's our suggested rain prayer.

3. "The global economic downturn"
"Oh Lord, cutteth thy capital-gains tax; smite those who think gummint is the solution, not the problem, and strangle not the fruits of thy spirit, factories and refineries, with Red Tape and bureaucracy and needless regulation. Amen."

2. "The lingering danger of terrorism"
"Lingering"? Terrorism's been around in one form or another since about two months after man fully evolved (note to Perry: During the dinosaur age), and probably before that. And it's not going anywhere anytime soon."

1. "Continued debasement of our culture"
Oh, pleasepleaseplease provide a lengthy and specific list of all the things you think fall under this category, governor. The Lady Gaggagas what with their vampish dress, the homosexual agenda being promoted on sitcoms, rude language among the so-called "rap" groups, and rock and roll.

Update: Here's the text of Perry's announcement; which included a link to the website for the event, called "The Response.".

AUSTIN - Gov. Rick Perry has proclaimed Saturday, Aug. 6th, as a Day of Prayer and Fasting for our Nation to seek God's guidance and wisdom in addressing the challenges that face our communities, states and nation. He has invited governors across the country to join him on Aug. 6th to participate in The Response, a non-denominational, apolitical, Christian prayer meeting hosted by the American Family Association at Reliant Stadium in Houston. Gov. Perry also urged fellow governors to issue similar proclamations encouraging their constituents to pray that day for unity and righteousness for our states, nation and mankind.

"Given the trials that beset our nation and world, from the global economic downturn to natural disasters, the lingering danger of terrorism and continued debasement of our culture, I believe it is time to convene the leaders from each of our United States in a day of prayer and fasting, like that described in the book of Joel," Gov. Perry said. "I urge all Americans of faith to pray on that day for the healing of our country, the rebuilding of our communities and the restoration of enduring values as our guiding force."

Over the years, Gov. Perry has participated in events hosted by various faith traditions. His call to prayer on Aug. 6th is a non-denominational, apolitical, Christian prayer service to seek forgiveness, healing and blessing for our country.
