Mary's Mural Restored in Time for Pride Parade

A group of local artists have succeeded in their quest to get the famed Mary's mural back in its rightful place before Saturday's Pride Parade.

The building, long home to the city's most famous gay bar, has been sold and much of the property will be a parking lot for two new restaurants. But the owner of the new places, Bobby Heugel, has promised to keep the actual Mary's building up.

The longtime mural had been painted over so it had to be redone.

A bunch of people pitched in, and they also resized the work, apparently, so as not to disturb street art by DUAL and Coolidge.

The wheatpaste by DUAL, on the right, has seen better times.

Coolidge's dinosaur is saved, too.

We got high-res photos of the original mural sketch last night, adding face detail today.

Well....I think it is an AMAZING try.  It lacks so much detail in the faces of the people we knew.  But...on the other hand I am glad some Houston artists worked hard to bring back memories that we all shared in the Montrose.  I am 47 and still love the feel of walking around montrose......sure things have changed but Mary's is an icon.  Thanks to the owners for saving a piece of history and thanks to the artists for their great work !!!!

Thanks for the write-up. We've done a lot more work today, got about a day of detailing left.

The mural wasnt resized, it was scaled exactly with the original cat that we were able to recover.

Love it! Here's hoping some punk doesn't put their awful tag over it like they did with the cat.

Any idea what happened to the DUAL? It looks like it was splashed :(

another DUAL got splashed downtown yesterday too.  between that and the rain, that poster's definitely seen better days.  that's a bummer.

Well, Balls was one of my favorite bits. I like the idea of a cat on a bar stool in a bar.
