Your Chance to Play for Jerry Glanville: Tryouts This Weekend

Categories: Football
The "House of Pain" era was, for many Houston Oiler fans, a bit of an embarrassment. While most gladly embraced the flamboyant Jerry Glanville and his dirty play (at least until he kept losing), others cringed at his antics.

Leaving tickets for Elvis each game? Okay, we guess. Awarding one player each week a toughness award and then having him march the length of the field in an Army helmet as a ceremony? Pass.

But if you're one of those people just dying to play for Jerry Glanville, now's your chance.

He's coaching the Hartford Colonials of the new United Football League (Motto: "No, we actually exist") and the team is holding open tryouts in Houston this weekend.

Register from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Houston Amateur Sports Park at 288 and Airport Boulevard and you can be timed in the 40 and do one-on-one drills.

Oh, and you can also pay a nonrefundable $60 fee.

"We're looking to fill areas where we need help," Glanville said in the announcement. "We're a team that has a lot of positions where there are some opportunities for a guy to make the squad. We're looking for depth as well as starters. We're also looking for long snappers, punters and kickers."

The Oilers aren't the only Houston connection for the Colonials. The O-line coach is veteran NFL assistant Larry Zierlein, father of 1560 The Game morning co-host Lance Zierlein.
