Metro's police force has a new leader.
Metro's new police chief is a Hispanic veteran HPD cop with a law degree.

HPD Captain Victor Rodriguez replaces Tom Lambert, who has taken another role in the agency, after a somewhat lengthy search.

My goal and desire is to make METRO's police department the premiere transit law enforcement agency in the country," said Rodriguez. "I want to make it more responsive to the community. I want people to feel as safe and secure on our buses and trains as they do riding in their own cars."

The Metro force has about 220 personnel.

Rodriguez, who's been with HPD since 1985, now oversees the North Division.

Metro listed the following innovations he brought to the Houston force:

Creation of a Warrant Execution Team that focuses on repeat and violent offenders

Refocus of Divisional Tactical Unit operations to target crime trends and serial criminal activity

Greater emphasis on the Differential Response Team efforts to closely work with the community to identify and solve crime problems

He earned a law degree from the University of Houston Law Center in 1996 and a bachelor's degree in public management from the University of Houston Clear Lake. He starts on the job later this month.
