Down Goes the Downtown Y!!!

Going down.
Driving past the downtown YMCA last night about 7 p.m., the sun was filtering through what had become an empty, windowless hulk.

Today there's even less of it.

The trucks have moved in and started the takedown of the building, which looks charming and is quirky enough inside to mourn, although supposedly it's so full of asbestos it could never be renovated in a financially feasible way.

The new Y, a couple of blocks away, has been open for months now, of course.

Swamplot has some more pictures, including this one from reader Joe Lex.

Eventually it had to happen and I have to say it's sad to see it go. I played in a shitload of basketball leagues here over the years, this place had alot of character to it. I have not been to the new one yet, but from the pictures it's beautiful.

I've never been to the old one. The new one is awesome! Very nice and clean!

So terribly sad.

Having lunch at the Y was one of my favorite afternoon activities, as it were.
