Violent-crime rates have dropped in both Houston and the nation, according to the FBI's just-released annual report on crime statistics.

Nationally violent crime dropped 5.5 percent; in Texas six percent and in Houston the drop was 5.9 percent.

(You can see the Texas stats here.)

DPS "does not speculate on crime trends related to this report," a spokesperson said, but the agency's director, Steven McCraw, praised "law enforcement officers throughout the state."

In Houston, the number of crimes were down in all the categories in the report: murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, theft and motor vehicle theft.

The total number of incidents dropped from 2009's 146,526 to 2010's 137,814.

Hate crimes did rise in Texas, by 2.4 percent. There were 164 hate crime incidents in 2009 and 168 in 2010, according to the report. In both years about half the hate crimes involved race, with the bulk of those perpetrated against blacks.
