Bayport Cruise Terminal: Still Empty and Unused, Except for Wayne Dolcefino

Categories: Spaced City
We noted last month the interesting sidelight to the big Disney announcement that they'd be sailing a cruise ship out of Galveston -- that sidelight being that Disney was flipping the bird to the Port of Houston's boondoggle of a cruise terminal.

KTRK's ever-intrepid Wayne Dolcefino has now taken a look, as only he can, at the empty, dusty, forlorn $100 million Bayport cruise terminal, and made Port officials squirm with questions.

It reminded us of our 1998 story when all this was proposed -- we talked to residents of a hidden, charming neighborhood that was about to get a new neighbor in the massive overall billion-dollar Bayport project.

At least one of their fears wasn't realized -- at the time aggressively optimistic Port officials were talking of a million passengers a year using the cruise terminal.

Zero is about one million less than one million a year. That's a lot fewer cars coming down a small road to an out-of-the-way location to board a ship.

Of course, having to drive far to an out-of-the-way location to get to the Bayport cruise terminal might be one reason why they can't get anyone to use it.
