Joe Roach, the former Houston city councilman known as much for his dwarfism as being a politician, lawyer and TV analyst, has died after a brief illness, KTRK is reporting.

The station says Roach, 49, had been hospitalized for a month with an undisclosed illness.

He had been a city council member from 1994-2000 and had been a prosecutor before that.

He is survived by his wife and three kids.

Mayor Annise Parker issued a statement:

My heart goes out to Joe Roach's wife, Becky, his children and the rest of the Roach family. Joe was a friend and colleague. We served together on City Council, but I also knew him when he was chief prosecutor in the Harris County District Attorney's office. We both have adopted children, which provided another reason for us to bond. He was an energetic, dynamic man who took his responsibilities very seriously and served as a role model for a segment of our population that often experiences discrimination. His passing came far too early in life. He will be dearly missed.
