Inwood Forest Golf Course to Become Flood-Detention Pond, Greenspace

A defunct golf course on the northwest side of town will be converted to greenspace that will double as a detention pond during floods, Mayor Annise Parker announced today.

The Inwood Forest golf course, near Antoine and West Little York, has been purchased by the city for $9 million and its 220 acres will be renovated so that rainwater can pool there during heavy storms. The clubhouse will be used as a community center, and there will be walking paths throughout the property.

"This project is a great example of the steps we need to take to mitigate flooding in and around the Houston area," Parker said today. "With the help of various organizations, we are able to address this vital need, as well as give them the opportunity to have a community center nearby."

The city and the Harris County Flood Control District will build and maintain the detention ponds, which will be in the watershed of White Oak Bayou and Vogel Creek.

"With the City of Houston partnering with other community organizations to address the flooding issues around the surrounding area, the completion of this project will improve the quality of life for the residents in northwest Houston," said city councilmember Brenda Stardig. "The new detention area will aid with the drainage concerns and build a stronger sense of community as it provides over 220 acres of green space and a recreational center to the area."

I know I'm a couple of months late to this post, but I live in Inwood Forest, and this was a huge scam.  The original owner sold the course for cheap to a sleazy redevelopment company.  They were saying they were going to turn it all into low-income housing.  Of course, the residents knew exactly what that would do, so we fought to try to have it stopped, so we didn't just convert the whole neighborhood into a murder zone.

In the end, the city's brilliant solution is to pay these thieves $9 million, which is a gigantic profit for them.  Probably their plan all along. I imagine our once-beautiful clubhouse will be nicely wrecked by the "community" once it's converted to an expensive community center.  And, Ms. Stardig, we know what the encroaching "community" is like; we don't want open our backyards opened up to them to build a stronger sense of "community."  All of our home values are permanently shot now.  Of course, not a cent of that $9 million will ever compensate the residents for that.  People are still selling in droves, though.  It's all been one sick joke, and it's sad.  It was a beautiful golf course for so long.

@SemisolidSnake .. the original owner died'and his daughter, the new owner living up north decided shed didn't want this asset, the golf course, any more. ....  It was a shame the way the redevelopment group wanted to tear apart the value of our neighborhood .. but let's make something very clear.. there is no scam involved in having the city of houston come to the rescue and make the greenways and future retention ponds available.  They are true heros and we should be good stewards of the community property.  As far as "rapists hiding in the woods.". we haven't seen that.  It is too open and there are too many people using the walkways (as intended):  cycleists, couples walking, kids walking their dogs on leash etc. We've demolished any questionable places that kids doing drugs would take advantage of ( west course golf bathrooms now gone!) .  We still have alot of crime and more burglaries e, but we're still better off then the surrounding area.

Yes our home values are shot.. we're watching our friends in bellaire sell their  40 year old houses for $450,00 for a tear down and it hurts watching our investment tank.

Bond money raised for capital improvement and flood control doesn't pay teachers. This is not money raised through property taxes for the school district. This is money raised for flood control, and it would be illegal to use it for anything else.

The hat that is government bonds sold specifically for flood control. This is money that has already been allocated and can not be used for anything else. It is not taxpayer money, which is what is used to run the city government. If you had purchased bonds for capital improvement you would be ripped off if that money was used for any other purchase.

I understand that Bond money is raised for capital improvement and flood control and doesn't pay teachers. HOWEVER, it is re-paid by our property tax dollars and now the new "fee" for flood control. In a time when the city is siting the need to layoff law enforcement and firefighters, it doesn't seen prudent to purchase land. Additionally, the city has over $40MM of property that it is currently trying to sell, so purchasing additional property to the tune of $9MM just doesn't make fiscal sense. My two cents --

@Tmoss67  Good point! I'll call my flood insurance guy and cancel my policy. Why sweat my house that I built on the bayou over a silly flooding issue when repairs are on someone else's dime? Hope my insurance guy doesn't work on commission!
