Gabrielle Giffords: No Media Appearances If She Goes to Husband's Shuttle Launch

Expected to go to Florida for shuttle launch.
Staffers for Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, recuperating here after her Tucson shooting, say she still plans to attend the April 29 launch of her husband's space shuttle mission.

But if she does, there will be no press interviews or public statements.

"The congresswoman will not meet with the media or issue a statement while she is in Florida," spokesman C.J. Karamargin said. "After the launch, members of Giffords' staff will hold a press conference to discuss the event and her reaction to her husband's latest mission."

The announcement did not discuss whether any pictures of Giffords would be released, but that seems unlikely.

Staffers say no final decision has been made on attending the launch, but they are optimistic.

"Doctors overseeing the congresswoman's recovery at TIRR Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston will have the final word on whether Giffords will be able to attend the launch at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida," Karamargin says. "Our office is making plans for her to attend, pending medical approval."

Giffords's husband, Mark Kelly, will be on the last launch of the shuttle Endeavour, expected to be the penultimate shuttle flight.
