Dynamo Light Up the Scoreboard Against Vancouver

Will Bruin got his first MLS goal

​Goals were plentiful for the Houston Dynamo on Sunday night, as they opened up their home stand with 3-1 victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps FC. Most of the night's goals came in a span of five minutes -- for both teams.

Dynamo forward Cam Weaver got the party started in the 37th minute in vintage fashion, off a Dynamo set-piece. On a free kick, Brad Davis swung a cross into the box, where Bobby Boswell headed it down in front of goal. Weaver was the first to the loose ball, where he one-touched it into goal for the 1-0 lead..

But before the 12,047 orange-clad fans at Robertson Stadium could settle down from the goal celebration, Whitecaps forward Camilo was quick to bring them back to reality. Less than a minute from Weaver's goal, the Dynamo defense got a little sloppy with a Whitecaps throw-in. Davide Chiumiento laid a short pass to Camilo inside the box where he finished easily and tied the game up at 1-1.

In the 42nd minute, it was Vancouver's defense that got sloppy. Davis dropped a pass to Danny Cruz, who delivered a great service ball to a wide-open Boswell. Boswell volleyed the ball in the air for the 2-1.

Then in the 76th minute, rookie Will Bruin got his first MLS career goal. Davis sent a deep pass to a streaking Bruin. When Whitecaps goalkeeper Jay Nolly came off his line to try and break up the play, Bruin was able to beat him to the ball, fake left, and shoot the ball into a wide open goal. For young Bruin, his first MLS goal was a big relief.

"I've had my chances in the last few games to put one in, and I didn't," Bruin told Hair Balls. "I was just happy and pleased that I could get the third one and put the game out of reach."

Head coach Dominic Kinnear was just happy to see some scoring from the people he pays to score. "Good to see three goals; good to see the forwards scoring."

The Dynamo now have five points with a 1-1-2 record, good enough for third place in the Eastern Conference. Though it may be a bit early in the season to worry about the standings -- especially since three other teams have five points in the East -- Kinnear wants to move up a fast as possible.

"I know we leap-frogged a couple of teams in the standings," said the Dynamo coach. "I don't care if it's the fourth week or the 34th week, it's important to try to climb as high as you can.

"We left the field disappointed last time. We stepped off the field today with a win - and the way we did it -- I think it was gratifying for everybody."

The Dynamo will continue their home stand with three of their next four at the Rob. Next Sunday, they meet their old pals the New England Revolution, who currently sit in second place in the East; a perfect opportunity for the Orange to leap-frog another team.
