Aggie Conservatives Denounce Gay Seminar With Single Greatest Quote in 21st-Century Higher Education

• Amen, colleen! :D Its people like these that make me feel ashamed to be a bisexual republican aggie.

• It is patently offensive to call the existence of GLBT groups, who may or may not promote safer sex education, as "funding inequality". I quickly googles student activities and found 23 recognized religious groups and 5 recognized political groups; there are another 50-70 groups "in transition" which means they are up for funding, potentially, in the future. The majority of those are perfectly capable and willing to sponsor a "no sex before marriage campaign". There is no funding disparity. 

• You are absolutely wrong. Please get your facts straight. No one is "pushing" anything. The GLBT resource center is there for GLBT students who need education and support -- they have the one of the highest suicide and drop out rates in the country. 2-3 GLBT aggies attempt suicide a month. But no one is forced to go to the GLBT center, just like no one is forced to go to any student center on campus.The administration has NOT as of today made a statement in support of the GLBT, as a matter of fact many GLBT students are feeling ostracized and scared and unsupported by the administration. The safe-sex talk was not forced upon anyone. Although hetereosexual safe sex is taught in the classroom at TAMU (which no one seems to be complaining about), SAFE sex for GLBT students are not covered in those classes. And so a speaker was provided to fill that need. Students are adults, and so even if YOU consider it "porn" it is not YOUR right to tell others they can not attend, but this talk was not forced upon anyone. Just like christian speakers are not forced upon the jewish and muslim students on campus. A total of $20 of tax payers money was spent to take the speaker to dinner, and no more. If you don't believe this, then go and look at close look at the financial statements that Texas Aggie Conservatives requested through freedom of information and then posted. The issue here is live-and-let-live -- that is tolerance. NO ONE is asking the TAC to go away, NO ONE is asking the TAC or any other student to be GLBT, NO ONE is asking students to attend GLBT meetings or programming. What is being asked for is letting the GLBT students live their lives and have equal access to education and mental and emotional support. THAT is tolerance. GLBT do not have to follow a fundamental christian lifestyle, and fundamental christian students do not have to follow a GLBT lifestyle.

• The real issue here is that Texas A&M, a public university, has not been viewpoint neutral, has unjustly chosen sides institutionally and financially. Texas A&M and the GLBT Center programs push a one-sided and perverse sexual worldview onto A&M students that is contrary to traditional moral values like chastity. Through taxes and mandatory student fees, Texas A&M forces conservative taxpayers and students to pay for the GLBT Center's one-sided and perverse programs that conservatives strongly oppose. Texas A&M University institutionally support and annually gives about $90,000 in tax money and mandatory student fees to the GLBT Center while conservative family, marriage, and chastity education receives absolutely no support or funding from the university. Texas A&M administration and faculty claim to be for "diversity," but they are using taxpayer money and mandatory student fees to fund the promotion only one sexual worldview and to fund opposition to traditional moral values like chastity.

• Sex is natural! Every religion loves sex! We're not talking about sex here, we're talking about things like tongue piercings, condoms and genital shaving. They are clearly NOT natural. Might not be anything wrong with them, but they are no more natural than computers or airplanes. As for "wanting to learn", WTF? I mean how retarded are these students. No seminar was needed to teach me about sex. I learned all I needed to know from the girls I dated and books that I read!

• You're right that there is nothing wrong with sex between consenting adults, however there is a time and place for everything. Any civilized society will maintain that some things are private. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with tongue piercings, condoms or genital shaving but they are clearly NOT natural. Adults are free to do what they like within the law, but they shouldn't force other people to pay them via taxes.

• Hitler was either atheist, agnostic or at most deist. He was dragged along to church a couple of times as a kid by his mum. That does not make him a Catholic. As a teenager, he wrote poetry in praise of Wotan, ancient Germanic Pagan God of War. Within the Nazi Party, he surrounded himself with Atheists such as Martin Bormann and Neo-Pagans like Heinrich Himmler. And I don't think murdering millions of people (many of them Catholics including nuns and priests as well as other Christians) is very moral.

• Why do you assume that the people who hosted or attended this seminar do not have "moral values" (an incredibly vague term)? Sex is not immoral, sex is a very natural human behavior. It is not some icky, evil thing like some people like to make it out to be. Furthermore, you do not get to dictate what is and is not moral (and neither does anyone else).

• I was under the impression that those organizations listed as recognized, do receive some assistance, if not all of their financial support, from student fees, while those listed as "not recognized" do not. • although i completely agree with you, the majority (if not all) of the religious organizations do not receive student fee money. they pay dues or get donations. they just get to be listed on the A&M website and can rent classrooms and things. the GLBT center at A&M receives 60,000 dollars in fee money.

• "In transition" means they recently had an officers election and some of the new officers haven't completed the required paperwork. It's the end of the school year, so lots of clubs are working through their officer transitions.

• Oh everybody deserves the tolerance. Of course, by itself, tolerance just means accepting everyone's right to live as they like, provided they don't infringe on the rights of anyone else. Exceptions to this rule requie good ethical, secular justification. For example, with homosexuals, there is no ethical, secular justification for denying them equal protection under the law or the right to marry each other. It certainly does not mean that the law doesn't "tolerate" people who disagree. It's just that that disagreement doesn't get to override the rights of others all by itself.
