State Rep Introduces Antidiscrimination Legislation for Intelligent Design Proponents

The glowing state rep Bill Zedler
A Dallas-area state representative has introduced legislation aimed at preventing anyone from discriminating against those who want to research intelligent design in Texas. Rep. Bill Zedler of Arlington sponsored House Bill HB2454 because he believes that colleges are keeping important research into the controversial theory from happening.

"It appears there is academic freedom to debate every issue other than this one," he said.

Calling it a "free speech issue," Zedler believes that those who want to study this particular theory do not have equal footing with other scientists.

"Some schools have a guy out there praising Hugo Chavez and nothing happens to him. You have others espousing communism and nothing happens," he explained. "Lo and behold, you talk about anything that might lead to intelligent design, I mean to tell you, [they] are gonna go after you."

Zedler claims that professors are being denied tenure and even losing their jobs because they want to spend university research dollars looking into the theory of intelligent design. When asked if he could cite specific examples, he was unable to, but said we could e-mail him for that information. At the time of posting, we had not received a response to our request for information in that regard.

For his part, Zedler says researchers should be able to "follow the evidence" regardless of where it leads. He believes no one should be discriminated against no matter what theory they put forth and he hopes HB2454 will prevent witch hunts against those who would want to study any theory.

"What this will do is basically put everybody on notice that somebody shouldn't have to be tarred and feathered [for this]," he said.

Zedler doesn't believe more left-leaning scientific research like whether homosexuality is a choice or part of genetic code is being discriminated against, but he claims the bill is necessary for legitimate research into intelligent design.

Apparently this idiot is utterly unaware that the evidence has been followed wherever it goes. That's why there was a ferocious debate about evolution where the relevant researchers ultimately came to embrace the theory of evolution and discarded creationism OVER ONE CENTURY AGO.

Legislators that ignorant of history TRULY have no business being in elective office!

Hey, let's not post disparaging remarks about King George the Insignificant (a.k.a. Lyin' George or The Lyin' King) It is absurd to fault him for taking a vacation most of the time, just because he was, for sure out to lunch the rest of the time. And, what has the current President accomplished down there "on vacation" in South America? The Lyin' King was able to, through his unique talents, spit in the face of the U.N., (with us or against us), cause the first rift in NATO since it was formed, utterly destroy all good will America had accumulated in Europe since WW II, lie us into a War in Iraq, all accomplished while dancing a jig, pointing the finger at Bill Clinton for lying about having "sex with that woman", and gleefully singing "Liar, Liar, pants on fire". We have to admit, George did have an impact on foriegn policy. Now President Obama is trying repair some of the damage and trying to reach across party lines to do what has to be done. Live with it Zeddy.

How's that budget deficit coming along? Oh yeah, forget the deficit that got them elected in favor of bullshit legislation.

Forget the deficit? That's sounds like the mantra of The American Idol in Washington (oh wait, he's not in Washington, he's on vacation again, nevermind).

Keep it up PFFFFFFFT, you guys are the absolute epitome of ludicrosity. When there are no facts to back your opinion, you will stand to the bitter end, never allowing the facts or good sense cloud the issues!... Zeddy? Is this an example of your flock?

What are you talking about? Congress is on vacation as well. And if you want to complain about vacation time, I assume you chastised Bush for his record number of days on vacation.Republicans campaigned on reigning in spending. All they have accomplished is slashing money from education and public health. This bill does nothing more than pander to his base.

How is it that W gets credit for a "working vacation" while in Crawford, but Obama gets called out for playing while on state visits to Brazil, Chile, and El Salvador?

PFFFFFFFT

Surely even you would see the difference between a working vacation at a ranch with an office and gallivanting around the globe with an entourage of hundreds...or maybe you wouldn't.

The assertion the only slashing of money has been from education and public health is a lie. You need to get your facts straight for once in your life before spouting off. A simple Google search is all you need to do.

After being the last in line throughout his elementary school and jr. high days, I guess Zedler finally is having a reaction to that. I guess now instead of being overlooked, he is determined to change that. What a way to do it.

One of these days people are going to realize tolerance is a two way street, you have to give it to get it.

University departments are allowed and encouraged to produce research specialties and to recruit for these specialties. For example, a physics department might want to recruit for string theory, a chemistry department for volatile organic compound engineering, while a biology department might be focused on modern evolutionary biology. This is the university's right and responsibility to do so.

*IF* a department chooses not to hire individuals outside of their research focus and to deny funding or individuals who choose to go in a different direction, that is their right as well. Academic freedom does not overrule an academic department's desire to build a concentration.

For those proponents of ID and creationism, I would say they would have a case *if* they had done the hard science and it had withstood the scrutiny. Instead, the most common approach is to find an apparent exception to evolution and to claim that since evolution is somehow not complete, it can't be true. What these folks need to do is to perform an exhaustive review of the research which makes conclusions based on evolutionary biology and to reinterpret this research using an alternative theory which better explains the data, and which covers data that evolution cannot. No such theory exists to date.

When ID or creationism can withstand scientific scrutiny, then it deserves to be on par or above evolution. This hasn't happened.

What's next? Laws to protect the Stork Theory of Human Reproduction? The Flat Earth Theory of Terrestrial Geography? Why not simply an Omnibus Law to Defend Long-Debunked Pseudoscientific Claims?

The fact of the matter is that most ID advocates do not "research intelligent design" -- in fact ID had no "theory", no formal mechanistic explanation, of the diversity of life. They simply offer gussied up versions of the same tired, long-debunked, creationist arguments against evolution.

It is really sad that people as narrow minded as Zedler can get elected to any office that entails making a decision of intelligent design. Why does he waste the time of money of the the issue has pretty much been slapped down in the Supreme Court and "intelligent design" has been construed as a way of getting the government (at any level) to fund religion in violation of the "seperation of church and state" doctrine. Assuming (r)ep. Zedler can read, and that his only source of education is the Holy Bible He should know that God is absolutely the ruler of heaven and earth. The earth is here at a perfect distance from the sun with all the proper ingredients for life. Life consists of things that exist because what they are made of exists. The moon, is more than a shiney thing in the sky... that are a whole variety of facts which can be studied, experiments conducted and replicated. Hello? That is called science. God INVENTED science. Some 13.6 billion years ago, the Big Bang happened. The entire uniiverse came into being from a singularity, a point of something so small it is nothing. Hello? In short, there is a big black, empty void...not even that, because there was nothing. Then there wasa huge blast of light and matter (matter is the stuff everything is made of) came into being. In six days? Zeddy... general relativity proves that depending on the vantage point and velocity of the observer of the event, it can be both, 13.6 billion years and 6 days. If you will broaden your vision and open your mind, perhaps you should go back to school. Otherwise, it would be a total waste of time and money just like your idiotic proposal

There is no possible way any design that is "intelligent" would have Bill Zedler as a component.

Wait. What professors are praising Hugo Chavez to the degree that conservative politicians are promoting the religious movement of Intelligent Design?
