Pedro Mendez: Convicted Cockfighter Now Accused Child Molester

Not ten months after pleading guilty to animal cruelty in a cockfighting case, Mendez now stands accused of indecency with a child. Wow. Animal abuser and (alleged) child molester. Maybe his next move will be to slip PCP into a convent's water supply.

Mendez's cockpit was discovered by chance in 2008 when a cop was serving a warrant at Mendez's rural home. Youreasttexas.com picks up the tale:

Initial reports said the deputy became suspicious when a group of 40 to 60 people ran toward a wooded area when he arrived.

Mendez was one of 17 individuals arrested at the time. However, authorities reduced the other's sentences to misdemeanors once they discovered Mendez was the sole owner of the property and event organizer.

Authorities discovered several mangled and dead roosters at the scene of the cockfighting ring, and others were kept in poor conditions.

Until his arrest in the sex case, Mendez had been serving a one-year term of probation after pleading guilty to animal cruelty in July of last year. Nacogdoches County authorities say that his probation will likely be revoked as the investigation into allegations regarding his relationship with an underage girl continues. Only three months to go. What a shame.

So far little other information has been released about the sex case. Should he be convicted of the second-degree felony, Mendez will face two to 20 years in prison and a fine of $10,000. Perhaps in TDCJ he will be treated better than the battling poultry he kept out at his country place.
