Patricia Mancuso Janowski: $1.5M in Embezzled Funds Gambled Away in Quick-E Mart's Poker Machine, Police Say

Categories: Crime

Not so good at the video poker.
They might not be willing to admit, but you have to just know that the proprietors of the Klein Food Mart on Louetta Road just loved it when they would see Pat Janowski pull up in the strip mall parking lot. Like them, you might even not be above giving her some goodies on the house, at least if this report is to be believed.

Police and Cape Software, the Spring woman's former employer, are now saying that the 61-year-old former bookkeeper and secretary, whose net take-home was reported at $3,800 a month, swiped $1.5 million from the Montgomery County company's coffers and shoveled much of it into the slots of video poker machines at Klein Food Mart.

"Family members have said she would stop there on her way home from work and stay there until it closed," said Brad Beers, an attorney representing Cape Software, Janowski's erstwhile employer in The Woodlands. "They (store employees) would give her cigarettes. She was just there constantly."

According to court documents, the Dale Earnhardt fan and Obama-hater managed to swipe roughly $14,000 per month from January through September of last year. In November 2010, company officials finally discovered that Janowski's alleged thievery began back in 2002, a few months after her hiring. The documents state that she was in charge of payroll and "systematically caused unauthorized" transfers from company accounts into her own and disguised them by coding them as payments to vendors.

Janowski is now in two kinds of hot water. Even though they suspect they won't be able to get much money out of her, the company is suing Janowski and her husband in civil court for return of Cape Software's money, and Montgomery County cops have charged her with criminal theft. She posted a $50,000 bond and was back on the streets Wednesday.

Hopefully the Klein Food Mart has sent her a care package -- maybe a carton or two of Virginia Slims would help soothe her frazzled nerves.

I'm not condoning the theft - however, instead of making jokes about her being a poor video poker player - you should be feeling bad that she was that addicted. Also the video poker owners should be ashamed too. I know that gambling is money in their pockets - but we have an obligation to steer an addict away from their addiction whether it be substance abuse or gambling.

We should feel bad that she likes to steal money and use it to gamble? Uhhh, no.Personal responsibility, no passing the buck.

Why use the Presidents name in this story. Its sad that you used it in the hate segament of her opinion toward him. I guest it makes her actions right because she has Obama to blame. It's not that she was paying here bills or unemployed.Be Fare! write about the story and all involved. Not the opinion of the very persone who committed the crime

I don't understand what being a christian or anything else has to really do with the story, priests commit crimes, but I would have to say they are christian. Sad but true this same crime is happening more and more and I believe the people committing these embezzling crimes do it because of companies that don't keep up with their business until they are robbed blind and it is too late

AMEN. Convicting people via the internet is NOT exactly Justice For All. Stories like this just promote nasty and critical remarks about people that PEOPLE don't know, nor know all the circumstances behind the story. News media is news media, they don't get or write stories they have no job. I really blame a lot on the judicial system as to what information can be released to the public; i.e. addresses, date of birth, etc., because you don't see any of this info on them if they get into trouble. A friend got into a little trouble and the news media, internet harrassment and a lot of other stuff made it almost impossible to stay in his house. Crime is crime, but it seems like this type of story gets more media than more serious ones..like maybe rape or murder I agree the thread needs to end.

The woman has a serious problem. Love how they made sure they tagged her as a common redneck.

Actually, her FB page says her favorite president is Obama, she is not a hater but a lover.

Too bad her FB is blocked, I would have wanted to see if she listed herself as a christian along with being the DE lover/O hater. Effin redneck!

And don't you sound like a good Christian yourself? And she is about as far away from being a redneck as you can get.

What does Obama, Christian or Earnhardt have to do with this? Kinda confused....also, in reading all these posts, you people are quite judgmental. Do any of you that are prejudging this woman actually know all the facts....I bet not. Sad fact is this Beers guy seems to be pleaing his civil case via the news media, and she was arrested for criminal reasons, there is a differnce. As someone else said, Cape Software sure was lax to let this many years go by and not miss this magnitude of money, I wouldn't send my business to them, can't manage your business, employees....can't manage my business either.

Sorry the other 99.5% really clouds the rest. I wouldn't use the term "poser". But I would use judgmental, hypocritical, and dishonest.

Of course she was Christian. There is zero percent chance of her being anything else, and I'll take all cash bets on this, any amount.

If she in fact claims to be christian, that does not mean she IS christian. You are only displaying your own hatred and ignorance. And, oh yea, its completely not possible that an atheistic or agnostic white person could possibly commit the crime that she did. That premise is so stupid on it's face you just sound like a fool.

justsayin

At least she didn't kill her child or something worse, that is happening everyday too and even worse her boyfriend didn't molest her baby.

DrXym
DrXym

Professing to be an agnostic / atheist says nothing of someone's personal beliefs or morals. An atheist could be kind, selfless and generous or a heartless bastard. What is certain is that if someone DOES proclaim to be a christian then they can add hypocrisy to their crimes if they're caught pilfering, diddling children or whatever.

Wow, what a waste. She coulda set all that money aside, then fled to a non extraditable country and lived happily ever after.

Gambling addicts aren't known for their ability to save money.

Bookkeepers & accountants have considerable ability to hide theft, however, auditors should have caught onto this well before 7 years had passed.

I will give Cape Software credit though, often in cases like this the company won't press charges due to the bad press and the person gets away with it. Often they then move onto a new company and keep doing it. (It is more common with charities).

justsayin
justsayin

Cape Software credit.............what are they gonna get if she spent all the money?Maybe some more bad pres, or maybe just pure satisfaction?

Lorhaiden
Lorhaiden

Exactly. They aren't going to get anything out of it, except maybe satisfaction. There is little chance to get any money back let alone all. Even the effort to get the money back will be expensive. For lots of companies it's just easier to dismiss the employee and let it be someone else's problem.

Actually University are the biggest offenders from what I know. I know of four different colleges that fell prey to this and never reported it. Three times the person had moved on and once they let him go, but actually gave a neutral job reference. I was never able to get the amount that was stolen other than that one of them got over six figures in six months.

Once every couple of years we hear of an arrest in the public or private grade school districts, but never at the University level. Think about how often it must be going on...

Who is going to believe her family members that she blew 1.5 million on lottery poker or $500 a day?

She easily posted the $50,000 bail.

no one special

She posted the bond because her family has (had) money and property. She did gamble - a LOT - just don't think anyone really realized how much. (Accept maybe the video poker store where she played.)

It is remarkable how much a clever accountant or bookkeeper can steal, especially if there is no inventory, no widgets to count and compare to $ revenues, as in service businesses. I used to hire forensic accountants for surprise audits specifically looking for crime where there experience told them to look.
