The Flagship, in its dying days
Landry's Restaurants, the company owned by Tilman Fertitta that is tearing down Galveston's Flagship Hotel, has been disputing reports that demolition crews have been tossing debris into the Gulf.

No longer.

A letter to the contractor, issued publicly by Landry's VP Jeff Cantwell, says, "We are deeply disappointed to learn that our contractors may have allowed demolition debris to fall into the Gulf."

Cantwell says, "It has become abundantly clear that [the contractor and subcontractor] did in fact have knowledge of debris falling into the water and intentionally withheld such information from Landry's in an effort to disguise their negligence and hide their wrongdoing."

The company also issued a statement:

Video, which was posted Monday evening, appears to support claims made by some eyewitnesses and is contrary to what we were told upon our initial inquiry.

As a result of these findings, we have made demands upon our contractors that any debris that fell into the Gulf be immediately cleaned up. We have made further demand that the demolition contractors implement all known precautionary measures to ensure that this does not happen again.

The contractor told the Galveston County Daily News that the situation would be rectified.

"We're going to do what's right," said Larry Brown of Ardent Construction. "If there is debris in the water, we'll get it cleaned up."
