Doug Supernaw: Troubled Former Country Star Surfaces in Bandera

Doug Supernaw likely feels at home in Bandera
Since we published our 2007 cover story on troubled one-time country star Doug Supernaw, our site has become something like the de facto Web site for the former Houstonian. He now has virtually no Web presence of his own; both his own site and his fan site have long since vanished, and he went off the rails long before Facebook or even Myspace had come about.

So for the last four years, the comment boxes attached both to the link above and this one have been your best bets to find new information on the man. The most recent info placed him in Bandera, a hard-drinking little dude ranch Mecca in the hills northwest of San Antone. If there was anywhere in Texas Supernaw could be tolerated, I thought to myself, it just might be Bandera, where saloons outnumber churches by a factor of five, and the main drag rings out with hardcore Texas country just about every night.

A Bandera resident who wished to remain anonymous said that line of thinking was not far from the mark. He said he thought Supernaw could even make a living there, sitting in with bands at the honky-tonks on Highway 16.

He also said that Supernaw, while just as pleasant and nice as can be, was still very crazy. "When someone is sitting there in an office in a pair of pajamas and they say that they own the Bank of America...well, that's a real different feeling."

"I was serenaded by him," the man continued, "so I guess I've got something I can tell my kids. But it was just sad. What bothered me the most was that he needs help. He's afoot. He could get run over real easily. It happens all the time here."

The man's characterization of his talk with Supernaw sounded very much like this comment left by someone claiming to be Supernaw on one of our blogs a year ago:

You all are not going to happy until i am dead are you. everybody around me had to get theirs. they all wanted my money and they got it. the government wanted me too and they almost had me. yeah i like to party so what. they took everything i had. be a hero for my kids. listen asshole every day i wake up with the dirt under my feet i am a hero. elvis died at 42. i outlived him and a whole list of others. old michael jackson finally let the government get him. he never made 51. he should have stuck to pot and booze.
"I wanted to laugh, but I thought it would be rude," the man said. "I just didn't know what to think."

He said he was glad when an opportunity presented itself for him to politely send Supernaw away. (He invented an appointment when a friend came by.)

"Doug is certainly one of the most unique people I've met," the man says.

I hang out with some folks who talk to Doug on a regular basis.  I hear he's currently living in Louisiana

I wish ppl would stop judging others when you really don't even know them! Sure Doug has issues, one of them being, I believe, Alcohol Demenia. Alcoholism is a disease and if it doesn't eat your liver up quick enough, then it will eat your brain up. I'm saddened by his demise as I think he's one of the nicest, funniest, caring, talented and overall gorgeous men that I've ever met. DOUG: You need to make a cd of all the hilarious songs that you've written just for fun. You're so witty and I bet the cd would make the top 10. I'd play it at the station! :)  I'm keeping you in my prayers and I hope that our paths cross again!! Best Wishes Doll~ Love you, Kari

Doug is my cousin and I was just with him in Bandera last week. We had BBQ and played music til 2am. He seems great! Last year I went to visit him and he was doing OK but this year he seems like a different person. Doug played all his hits on acoustic guitar as well as two new songs that were easily as good as anything he's ever written. He told me he has an entire album worth of new music and that he will probably make at least one more album. Doug wasn't delusional or "crazy" at all. He's very kind, a little shy about his former fame and very down to earth and a lot of fun to hang out and talk with. I don't believe we have seen the last of the great side of Doug Supernaw!

By the way, it is said that people who live in glass houses shouldn't cast stones.  Why don't all you people with perfect lives and nothing better to do than sit and talk crap about someone you know little to nothing about, educate yourselves on something worthwhile.  Last time I checked, gossiping and judging others was not favorable to our Creator.  Try praying for others, and yourselves as well.  By the way, I am NOT in ANY way claiming to be better than anyone else but, I strive to speak the truth and only elaborate on things I hve factual personal knowledge of...such as Doug.  God bless you all.

First off, Doug is not a druggie, unless there are still some of you close minded people out there that consider marijuana a drug.  Doug has no "screws loose".  He has a chemical inbalance commonly referred to as Bipolar disorder.  If pedople weren't so busy trying to judge, tag, and label others, they would know what a talented, true, generous, loving, compassionate man Doug really is.  As or Doug looking awful and very old...BULLSHIT...Evidently you haven't seen him for any length of time.  He is gorgeous, sexy, clean, and in excellent physical shape considering his past accidents...You all sit there and gossip and judge him.  In the meantime, I am going to thoroughly enjoy his friendship, companionship and company.  I am truly blessed by knowing him.

Yes Doug definitely lives here in Bandera currently. He is known as one of the local kooks (though good hearted, I'd say). He may have a screw (or several) loose, but I'm still a fan :)

Not as sad as everyone thinks. He's a POS that has never done anything for anyone else. Just a selfish person that has ruined a lot of peoples lives. His problems are his own that he has been dealt due to his actions. I wish no ill will towards him but there was a time I did. I hope he finds peace in his fractured mind.

I met him through a friend about 2 yrs ago, he owns a rundown house here in Johnston City, IL. He is still a partier, drugs and alcohol have been a big part of his life for a long time. You can tell he's "not right" and maybe that's from all the drugs he's done. They will deffinately take a toll on your appearance also, because he looks awefull and very very old. Its sad to say but someone his age that's always lived his life this way will most likely never change.

All I no is that hes got way more than a screw loose. Music is good but Mr. Supernut could use a brain transplant! If u need to contact him call the Longhorn Saloon in Bandera Texas... No bull sleeps on the pool table
