Parents' nightmare on the west side
Horrible story out on the west side of town -- three children, aged three or younger, have died and another four are hospitalized with serious injuries, the Houston Fire Department and news outlets report.

The fire, at Jackie's Child Care in the 2800 block of Crest Park Lane, began about 1:30 p.m., HFD says.

Firefighters gave CPR to some of the kids who were injured in a frantic struggle to save lives, reports say.

The Houston Chronicle reports the business is owned by Jessica Tata, 22, and had been cited a year ago for not having a fire extinguisher

"This is a very sad moment for the Houston fire department and this community," HFD spokesman Rick Flanagan told reporters at the scene.

Two of the killed children were siblings, KHOU reports.

The daycare is on the far west side, near the Westpark Tollway and Highway 6.

Tragic...child care centers may get a bad rap, but there are a lot more checks and balances inherent with centers: more employees (almost always with more training than a home care provider).
