Cop leaves bar at closing time and finds trouble

Jose Coronado, who has been with HPD for almost five years, was leaving Sherlock's Pub in the 1900 block of West Gray about 2:20 a.m. Saturday, police say; he was a customer, not working security.

"[A]s he was walking to his vehicle, he was alerted to a disturbance in the bar's parking lot," HPD's report says. "Officer Coronado intervened and a brief altercation ensued. Officer Coronado discharged his off-duty weapon. A fellow bar patron, Omar Ventura, was shot once in the abdomen and his brother, Rolando Ventura, was shot once in his left arm."

Rolando Ventura was taken to Ben Taub with "non-life-threatening injuries," police say.

HPD says:

There is a possibility a third individual was shot, but that person has not been located or identified. In addition, there are possibly other witnesses to this incident who might have left the scene prior to the arrival of patrol officers. Anyone with information in this incident is urged to contact the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600.

The incident is being investigated by the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs divisions and the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
