Comment of the Day: Fine Print on Crime Stats
We have some great commenters here on Hair Balls, and it's time we paid some damn attention to them.
So we'll be highlighting a Comment of the Day each morning, from the previous day's work. Maybe two comments, even.
This will all be determined by a highly rigorous scientific formula involving wit, clarity and whatever else we feel like at the moment.
Last week we looks at the top ten neighborhoods in Houston to go to if you want your car stolen. As always, we warned against reading too much into the stats for various reasons. We use beat-patrol numbers from the Houston Police Department, and whatever is the best-known neighborhood identifier HPD attaches to those beats.
One reader cautioned us on the perils of doing that.

Richard, just a reminder that Glenbrook Valley is a specific neighborhood with specific boundaries. The statement "Glenbrook Valley and the areas around it" is misleading. "The areas around Glenbrook Valley" would have been a much more accurate statement. Of the 22 car thefts in December, only ONE was IN Glenbrook Valley. That would be the one in the 7800 block of Pecan Villas. The balance were NOT in Glenbrook Valley. The areas AROUND Glenbrook Valley have the issue, not Glenbrook Valley itself.
