Honoring Barbara Jordan's 75th Birthday: Five Video Clips

Starting tomorrow, Texas Southern University will begin a year-long celebration of what would be the 75th birthday of alumna Barbara Jordan.

Jordan was steeped in Houston, a Wheatley High grad who represented the Fifth Ward in Congress throughout the '70s.

5. Democratic Convention Keynote, 1976
Jordan made a huge splash with her high-profile keynote at the Democratic convention that nominated Jimmy Carter for President in the wake of Watergate. She called on Americans to come together: "A spirit of harmony will survive in America only if each of us remembers that we share a common destiny; if each of us remembers, when self-interest and bitterness seem to prevail, that we share a common destiny."

A triumphant return to the convention in 1992, as part of a trio of keynoters. (Making her two-for-two in terms of getting Democrats to the White House when she keynotes.)

1. Impeachment
Her first real appearance on the national stage, as part of the House Committee considering the impeachment of Richard Nixon. "My faith in the Constitution is whole, it is complete, it is total, and I am not going to sit here and be a silent witness to the diminution, the subversion, the destruction, of the Constitution," she said.
