Conservatives' Plan to Close Budget Gap: Sell Liquor on Sundays!!

• Some people sound like a fresh 21 year old college student. People have six days a week, Texas deciding to put one aside for the Lord does no harm. Saying it will help the budget does not mean it will help the morality of people. Most people that want liquor bad enough on Sunday stock up before hand anyways. Lastly, this has obviously not been thought through clearly enough. Anyone who drinks liquor knows it is well know to make you act stupid an;therefore, I do believe more people will end up behind bars, who funds jails? Think it through this helps no one, beside the rapid growing group of alcoholics, and of course belligerent minors.

• OMG... to help with the budget and to increase drunk driver, I don't think so "No" "No" liquor store opens on Sunday

• Yes, of course, now I realize why Louisiana is like a third world country.

• This is a stupid idea. People won't spend more money on liquor because the stores sell on Sundays. This will just spread liquor sales over seven days instead of six. This will give an advantage to big box retailers like Costco and Sam's who are already open for business on Sundays. Smaller stores and local chains like Spec's will be forced to start opening on Sundays, which will cost them more payroll, but not generate more sales each week. Saying it will increase taxes is a lie.

• The 'church and state' thing was brought up ironically in one comment above, because there was a plank in the 2006 Texas Republican platform to end the 'myth' of separation between church and state. And I'm sure it had its effect, getting votes from the evangelicals. But, now that these Conservatives can find no way to do the budgetary math without tax increases, they resort to stuff like this, in spite of what was in their platform.

• Oh sweet jesus it's about freaking time Texas came ambling out of the dark ages of moral pushiness. Coming from Louisiana, New Orleans to be exact. It was a shock to find out that Texas, the cowboy, rough and tough don't take no shit from anyone state pandered to morality laws seemingly set by a church lady. I miss the opportunity to buy liquor 24 hrs a day 7 days a week from anywhere. Yes, thats right you can go down to the bodega get smokes, a po-boy, milk and yes that evil fire water anytime you , as an adult wants to. I can't wait for the disbandment of the TABC. A real burr in the heal of Texas. If Texas wold just allow casinos then it would be on it's way to being that great place it use to be before religion got in the way of forward progress. I wish people would remember that religion is a hobby granted it has become a group hobby, but a hobby just the same. It has no business creeping into government.

• There may be some mitigating effect by people buying on other days, but I know that personally there have been Sundays where I have been flipping through a recipe book and I see something that looks awesome and I'm all set to make it before I see that it requires a hard liquor. That's definitely lost revenue for the state.

• I'm surprised it took the conservatives to repeal a law that is designed to protect us common folk who don't know any better from the sins of alcohol. Unfortunately, they are doing it to increase revenue instead of personal freedom. But the end result is the same, I will finally have the CHOICE as to whether or not to buy hard alcohol on a Sunday, rather than have a religiously motivated government make the choice for me, for my own good. To those of you complaining about church and state, or the degredation of society that hard alcohol sales will bring on a Sunday, then why aren't you advocating complete prohibition? Think that will solve all our problems? You can't accept hard alcohol sales 6 days of the week and not the 7th.

• This makes it sound like Texans drink so much alcohol in a day now that they can't get through Sunday without buying more. Is there any evidence that sales rise significantly when a state adds Sunday liquor sales? Or do you have pretty much the same demand spread over 7 days instead of only 6? If it is mostly the same demand, then wouldn't adding the 7th day raise costs to the retail outlets? Why am I seeing the possibility of no appreciable increase in the money received by the state, as the retail outlets raise prices to cover store costs for the 7th day of sales?

• Oh, perfect, more compassionate conservatism! I shall use the more readily available Maker's Mark to assuage my stagnant earnings, the cuts in my kids school music program and the state's dwindling mental health programs. During the same buzz, I will come to applaud the clear justice of my neighbor's $3.2 million salary left unmenaced by additional taxes and his estate being passed, minimally taxed, to the two kids I see out my window now returning from an Aspen vacation. If alcohol can do all this, while striking at the deficit, we should all say 'cheers'!! Cheers to a newfound separation of state and church!
