January Weekends: Don't Expect Much Light Rail

Construction for the ages

Long enough that -- on the heels of Metro having to suspend light rail service on some December weekends to accommodate construction -- they'll be doing the same for most of January, the agency announced today.

Light rail service will be shut down from 8 p.m. Friday to midnight Sunday on the first three weekends of January, Metro says.

"During the shutdowns, rail customers will be served by shuttle buses running parallel to the rail lines both north and south every six minutes between 5:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m.," the agency cheerily says. (They also add that "Bus service requires more travel time so allow more time for your trip.")

We have a call in to Metro to see if the bridge construction is taking longer than planned or not, but haven't heard back.

We can only begin to imagine the very complicated architectural wonder that this pedestrian bridge will end up being. The turrets alone must be awe-inspiring, not to mention the leaded stained-glass windows that require hours of artist time unencumbered by the rumblings of any light rail.

The bridge, being built by Texas Children's Hospital, "will connect all of the hospital's patient care facilities," Metro says.
