Ronald Newman, charged with aggravated assault with serious bodily injury
Christopher Matthews, a popular girls' soccer coach in Spring Branch, was walking outside the LosTios restaurant on the far west side with a woman about 11 p.m. Friday.

The woman's husband, Ronald Lee Newman, 51, saw them and approached. Convinced the two were having an affair, he punched Matthews. The coach, 33, hit the pavement in such a way to cause a massive brain injury, and he died late Sunday.

"There is no evidence at this time indicating there was any ongoing relationship between the suspect's wife and Mr. Matthews," Houston police said.

Matthews had been a teacher for nine years, the last five at Stratford High. His wife, Buffie, also taught and coached there.

"This terrible tragedy touches so many lives, and we will have many of our students with a connection to these two employees. We have a plan for today and crisis counselors are here for students and our staff. We will have support here for as long as it is necessary," school principal Christopher Juntti said on the Stratford website.

"As members of the Spring Branch Family, we must all be here for each other, and especially Buffie, in the wake of this tragedy. We ask that you keep Buffie and Coach Matthews's family in your thoughts and prayers," SBISD superintendent Duncan Klussmann said.

Newman has been released from jail on a $30,000 bond.
