Humans: Will you ever learn?

We like to think that animal abusers will not only get a lump of coal from Santa this time of year, but a pitchfork-in-the-ass from the Other Guy in Red as well. For those of you who like to keep tabs on just how low the human race can sink, here's a roundup of some of the worst cases of animal abuse from 2010.

5) Earlier this month, Randy Jones was arrested for throwing five pit bull puppies off a second-story balcony, killing two. Jones reportedly threw the dogs after a disagreement arose between Jones and a woman who was picking up "her half" of the pitties for breeding purposes. We're really surprised, because usually people who breed pit bulls are such calm, normal, non-redneck types.

4) What's with people throwing dogs? In September, Liberty County's Shane Rushing was arrested for allegedly throwing his six-month old dog off a 50-foot bridge into the Trinity River. Amazingly, the dog survived. Rushing reportedly said he was tired of the dog getting into his trash. We just hope that Rushing donates his body to science, so researchers can gain a better understanding of how a person can actually function when, instead of a brain, they are born with a gigantic bag of douche in their skull.

3) And speaking of people who do nasty things to dogs, like train them to fight each other, let this be a warning to you: the swift hammer of Harris County justice will fall upon you without mercy, sentencing you to -- gasp -- deferred adjudication! That's right -- after a multi-jurisdictional dog-fighting bust and subsequent high-fiving and dick-measuring in 2008, Harris County prosecutors finally got around to doling out incredibly light sentences, or outright dismissing the cases of, dudes who participated in dog fights. We're sure this taught them a real hard lesson.

2) The "Corridor of Cruelty" -- a dumping-ground for dogs both dead and alive near U.S. 59 and Little York -- continues to be a shame and embarrassment for Houston. Which is a real mystery, given how strong the Harris County District Attorney's Office has been when it comes to prosecuting animal cruelty cases. In July, animal advocate Deborah Huffman was a featured as a CNN "hero" for her tireless work in raising awareness of the Corridor.

1) Last July, dog owners in the Jackson Hill area reported a disturbing series of poisonings: their pets had consumed what appeared to be poisoned cheese balls. The mystery appeared to have been solved in November, when one dog owner's surveillance camera allegedly caught 43-year-old Qian Feng  tossing strychnine-laced cheeseballs into her yard.

And with that, we'll toss our hands into the air and give up on the human race.
